HTC vive VS Samsung odyssey (with a dash of oculus rift)

HTC vive VS Samsung odyssey (with a dash of oculus rift)

There is a lot of hype around Vr devices and Vr games. Here is some insight on a few big vr devices and some pros and cons to each.

 Samsung Odyssey

![samsung-odyssey-vr-headset-windows-mixed-reality-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWjLY4cdJy2i3g4kPavP2iJJzRyiAUnnu7Crh7smEajQA/samsung-odyssey-vr-headset-windows-mixed-reality-1.jpg)

 Pros
•	little screen door effect
•	plug and play
•	no room tracking hardware to fumble with or set up
•	joysticks on controllers
•	wasn’t heavy on face nor did it cause face sweat

 Cons
•	headphones are built in
•	I could hear outside people talking when using it
•	The controllers are only tracked by front of camera
•	Not actually AR (yet)
•	A couple hoops to go through to get to the steam games

Let me delve into some of these points now

 Screen Door
The screen door effect is vaguely there and easily adaptable to after a couple seconds I didn’t notice it anyway

 Plug and play
The plug and play is just that you plug it in and bam you can play no real setup the tutorial is kind of vague. But hey you get a house to explore and you really can teach yourself who needs tutorials these days.

 Joysticks
Joysticks on controllers is an amazing thing. Now I know what you’re saying why would I need those I could just use a controller if I wanted joysticks. Yes, you could but the motion of these Vr controllers plus the joysticks to move around or go through menus is a nice feature (honestly, it’s what has me debating it over the vive)

 Face sweating
Heaviness on face or sweating, now this is a big thing I honestly did not feel the weight on my face nor did it cause the heat to build up inside like it does for psvr, also had a good seal around the face I didn’t have any corner light leaks like the Rift gave me.

 Headphones built in
This is one of the biggest draw backs for me I have a pair of gaming headphones I use already (logi g930) and would rather use however these ones do swivel so I may be able to work around them,

 Noise pollution
Hearing outside voices kind of sucks however I was in a Microsoft store and they probably didn’t have it super high volume or it could be the headphones

 Controller tracking
The controller tracking seemed ok to me however there are a lot of reviews of it not being on par with the vive which makes sense as the vive has whole room sensors this one has just two cameras in the front

 Mixed reality?
They call it mixed reality yet it is only vr now with Microsoft anything is possible they could bring out ar later in an update I mean it does have cameras on it that must be usable besides just tracking the wands

 Steam access
The access to steam is not as plug and play you must go through the windows house to the desktop to steam sure a few hoops but other than that it works

 HTC vive

![htc_vive_pro_2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmV3v8qfn61mAnknQ7Je9joff9zT7XbMRu9CDHG3c6JkQ9/htc_vive_pro_2.jpg)

Now I have not gotten to demo this as it was broken at the time so I am going off reviews and other specs

 Pros
•	Almost no screen door effect
•	Great tracking
•	Full steam support

 Cons
•	Having to mount trackers to walls
•	Not super portable
•	Looks like your hooked into the matrix
•	Pricy

Let’s dive into these points

 Screen Door
The screen door effect is the main reason I want to demo them. I want to see comparison each person’s eyes are different. Now the pro reviews say no screen door effect at all however the screen is almost the same on the pro as it is on the odyssey so I kind of call bull on that

 Tracking
Tracking should be great as I must mount tracking boxes to my wall or on mounting poles so I better get good tracking however that also means to use it anywhere else I need those as well kind of defeats the purpose of vr if I’m locked to my one room

 Full steam support
Now with this it is nice that I can put this on and bam open a game in steam and play no hoops to jump through though big picture mode in steam is kind of clunky in the steam link hoping it’s not as bad in vr

 Matrix mode
Now a giant cable hanging out of the back is said to add weight to the back of the headset and let’s be honest it looks like your plugged into the matrix. There is a wireless addon but that costs money

![hqdefault.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmak1DJD9crE31VE5fwATCy16kL1AXNb5dD9DWxACuHo5E/hqdefault.jpg)

 Pricey
Now this is where the vive draws me back on is it worth it? The base vive it is still 500$ the headset is old and not as good as the odyssey if you want the upgraded headset your looking at 700 more so now you’re up to 1200 for just the headsets controllers and tracking boxes
On top of that if you don’t want to drill into your walls you need the stands which good ones seem to be around 20-30 each so let’s say 50 bucks so now you’re at 1250 and then if you want the wireless module that’s around 600 so 1850 for wireless honestly 1250 for a headset that is already like the odyssey but with the ability to use your own headphones seem steep

Comparison between the two (I will be using the pro specs for this comparison)

•	Resolution of both is 2880 x 1600px
•	Both have controllers with them
•	Both have 110-degree field of view
•	Both have adjustable lens
•	Vive pro weighs 555g while odyssey weighs 2.2kg
•	Both use accelerometer and gyroscopes
•	Both have head and position tracking
•	Both use HDMI
•	Both have integrated audio
•	Both have 90Hz refresh rate
•	Vive has one mic while odyssey has 2

•	Vive is still using usb 2.0 while odyssey is using 3.0

•	Vive has port for your own headphones odyssey has headphones already built in

•	Vive has oled while odyssey has amoled

Those are the main comparisons that I pulled from
https://versus.com/en/htc-vive-pro-vs-samsung-hmd-odyssey

Conclusion
So, in conclusion the odyssey seems to have a good entry point for price wise and doesn’t need an additional purchase right away. However you don’t have the ability to use your own headphones, nor does it have external box tracking. Which is kind of good as I can toss my laptop in a backpack and go.
While the HTC vive has more tracking in a room if you’re going to stay there as well as some mods that can be done on it (adding fans and such). Unsure if that would be needed but it’s an option but with a high price point to bring it up to specs of the odyssey as the pro is needed.

If I missed anything or you have anything to add feel free to chime in

Personally, I have an Oculus Rift and I've never regretted it. Technically, the previous PC-based headsets are pretty much the same, away from the tracking system.

Even though I don't find the Oculus disturbingly heavy, I know the problem with the sweat. It would be really nice if the forehead support would solve this problem

>Headphones are built in

I don't know why this is a negative thing. The Oculus has absolutely fantastic built-in headphones that are as good as my gaming headset. The microphone is great, too. As long as you can simply remove the headphones, as with the Oculus, so that you have a free choice. That's more of a plus for me.

But nice comparison, resteemed you!

The reason the headphones portion is negative is due to the fact i have a pair of good gaming headsets that i already use and know are higher end then the built in ones and the Samsung occulus ones are non removable sadly
