Can you become a cult in just 7 episodes? Judging from what we have seen in the first 7 chapters of Watchmen the answer is yes. What Lindelof and his companions have done so far is surprising and artistically fabulous. When the news was leaked that HBO would make a series about the most beloved and complex graphic novel in history, the hype had skyrocketed, and with it had brought a great deal of concern. Would the story have been respected? Would it have been a prequel? A sequel? A readjustment? Would it have been a respectful tribute to the work of Alan Moore? If so, would they really be able to honor him? If not, how could they have respected the starting material without going outside the thin tracks on which they were placed? One step from the end of the first season we had all the answers. The TV Watchmen won all its bets. It is a sequel that has been able to draw heavily from the original material, transforming it and adapting it to the present day. Lindelof used Moore's story to tell something different, important, unchanging but extraordinarily current. The same cold war apocalyptic paranoia carried on the racial plane. The hatred mixed with heroism, the identity mixed with belonging, the fury mixed with fear, the dream mixed with reality. The utopia of Ozymandias was realized here with all the atrocious consequences it brought with it. But the utopia of one may be another's nightmare and so today the utopia of white supremacists is likely to be the nightmare of one on the other side of the barricade. And if racial hatred profoundly undermines the social fabric by itself, imagine what could happen if the holders of that hatred could be real gods is what Lindelof tries to tell us

Si può diventare un cult in soli 7 episodi? A giudicare da quello che abbiamo visto nei primi 7 capitoli di Watchmen la risposta è si. Quello che Lindelof e compagni hanno realizzato finora è sorpendente ed artisticamente favoloso. Quando è trapelata la notizia che la HBO avrebbe realizzato una serie sulla graphic novel più amata e complessa della storia l'hype era schizzato alle stelle, e con se aveva portato una grande dose di preoccupazione. La storia sarebbe stata rispettata? Sarebbe stato un prequel? Un sequel? Un riadattamento? Sarebbe stato un rispettoso omaggio all'opera di Alan Moore? Se si, sarebbero riusciti a rendergli davvero onore? Se no, come avrebbero potuto rispettare il materiale di partenza senza andare fuori dai sottilissimi binari sui quali si erano collocati? Ad un passo dal termine della prima stagione abbiamo avuto tutte le risposte. Il Watchmen televisivo ha vinto tutte le sue scommesse. E' un sequel che ha saputo attingere a piene mani dal materiale originale, trasformandolo e adattandolo ai giorni nostri. Lindelof ha usato la storia di Moore per raccontare qualcosa di diverso, di importante, di immutevole ma straordinariamente attuale. La stessa paranoia apocalittica da guerra fredda trasportata sul piano razziale. L'odio mescolato all'eroismo, l'identità mescolata all'appartenenza, la furia mescolata alla paura, il sogno mescolato alla realtà. L'utopia di Ozymandias qui è stata realizzata con tutte le conseguenze atroci che ha portato con se. Ma l'utopia di uno può essere l'incubo di un altro e cosi oggi l'utopia dei suprematisti bianchi rischia di essere l'incubo di chi è dall'altra parte della barricata. E se l'odio razziale mina profondamente il tessuto sociale di per se, immaginare cosa possa accadere se i detentori di quell'odio potessero essere dei veri e propri dei è quello che Lindelof cerca di raccontarci.

If the sixth episode had constituted a milestone impossible to forget, the seventh will forever represent an epochal turning point in the economy of the series and also of comics. Lindelof returns powerfully into history and does it as always with his usual elegance and crypticness. After telling us the story of the origins of other characters, the episode opens telling us about the long wave from which was born what we know as Sister Night. If this anti-climatic beginning hides in itself a good dose of quotationism and pervades with mystery and quality, it will be nothing compared to what awaits us. Veidt's trial, Lady Trieu's daughter / mother, the senator behind the biggest conspiracy ever seen and obviously the shocking final revelation. There is everything a fan, a spectator, an insider would like to see in a TV series. Character development, plot evolution, contemporary look, quotation, rhythm, direction and cutting-edge technique, experimentation, various cult scenes, various dialogues and phrases to remember, innumerable situations perfectly set between them, twists and turns. There is no second of this episode that is not fascinating, that is not perfect. Watchmen immediately became a great classic. In the future many successful TV series will be compared to it as a benchmark. A specific genre like the comic strip that has been able to broaden its gaze and become something different, a unique feature on the television scene as a whole. Maybe we won't have a second season. Lindelof does not want to achieve anything without having the right story in his hands, the right inspiration. If on the one hand we yearn to see endless episodes like this, on the other we are aware that Watchmen is so perfect precisely because it was conceived in the smallest details and with the maximum of talent by those who worked there. Having a second season just to continue telling a story would not honor a first season that as Bowie's "Life on Mars" is destined to remain forever in our memory.

Se il sesto episodio aveva costituito una pietra miliare impossibile da dimenticare, il settimo rappresenterà per sempre un punto di svolta epocale nell'economia della serie e di rimando anche del fumetto. Lindelof ritorna prepotentemente dentro la storia e lo fa come sempre con la sua consueta eleganza e cripticità. Dopo averci raccontato la storia di origini di altri personaggi, l'episodio si apre raccontandoci l'onda lunga dalla quale è nata quella che noi conosciamo come Sister Night. Se questo inizio anticlimatico nasconde di per se una buona dose di citazionismo e pervade di mistero e qualità, non sarà nulla rispetto a quello che ci attenderà. Il processo a Veidt, la figlia/mamma di lady Trieu, il senatore dietro la più grande cospirazione mai vista e ovviamente la sconvolgente rivelazione finale. C'è tutto quello che un fan, uno spettatore, un addetto ai lavori vorrebbe vedere in una serie tv. Sviluppo dei personaggi, evoluzione della trama, sguardo alla contemporaneità, citazionismo, ritmo, regia e tecnica all'avanguardia, sperimentazione, svariate scene cult, svariati dialoghi e frasi da ricordare, innumerevoli situazioni perfettamente incastonate fra loro, colpi di scena. Non esiste un secondo di questo episodio che non sia affascinante, che non sia perfetto. Watchmen è diventato immediatamente un grande classico. Nel futuro molte serie tv di successo saranno paragonate ad esso come parametro di riferimento. Un genere specifico come il fumetto che ha saputo allargare lo sguardo e diventare qualcosa di diverso, un unicum nel panorama televisivo nel suo complesso. Forse non avremo una seconda stagione. Lindelof non vuole realizzare nulla senza avere la giusta storia fra le mani, la giusta ispirazione. Se da un lato bramiamo per vedere infiniti episodi come questo, dall'altro siamo consapevoli che Watchmen è cosi perfetta proprio perchè è stata concepita nei minimi dettagli e col massimo del talento da chi ci ha lavorato. Avere una seconda stagione solo per continuare a raccontare una storia non renderebbe onore ad una prima stagione che come "Life on Mars" di Bowie è destinata a restare eternamente nella nostra memoria.
