Not so much a battle, but a cycle. It's also possible that it's just a really, really slow transition. From light, the big bang, to darkness, the death of all stars.

Nice pictures. Normally we see leaves as just a bunch of green thingies on a tree. They don't have the colorful appeal of flowers, for example, but take away all color and voila! The complexity of their shape and inner _veins_ comes out to surprise and amaze.
