Hong Kong Shanghai Specie Office

I have published several articles here on Steemit regarding Hong Kong Shanghai Specie Office silver ingots. Research has shown them to be circa 1970s. Out of San Francisco, California. I have been successful in linking a maker to these. As it was a mystery for a long time!

What I have been unable to do is find out where the Hong Kong inspiration came from. It my understanding the maker had a passion for traveling. He manufactured "fantasy" style ingots inspired by his favorite places to travel.

Two days ago I stumbled upon a very interesting coin.

1867 Hong Kong Dollar. Queen Victoria featured on obverse. Hong Kong on the reverse.

This is the EXACT Queen Victoria image used on the Shanghai Specie Office silver ingots! There is also a Hong Kong reference in the hallmark of the silver ingots. It is almost undeniable that the maker of the Shanghai ingots modeled his creation after this One Dollar Hong Kong coin! There are variations of this coin that references the weight in taels. Similar to some of the ingot denominations as well. My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw this.

This is a big step into piecing this puzzle back together. I have spent a good portion of the past two years studying where these ingots came from. Now I am starting to understand what influenced the maker to manufacture them. This is why this hobby is a ton of fun. Always something to learn. .
