A sign of history in my city: the Sandraccia's Bastion

Today I feel myself like a very old granny. I'm getting the flu and so I'm drinking a lot of cup of tea and eating just hot veggie soup. Well, nothing serious, it's just a seasonal issues, but I don't have so much energy to paint something and so I decided to wrote about a bit of interesting history of my city Pistoia (Italy). I want to share with you something more about the district where I live, that is called "San Marco".

The district is close to the third (and last) circle of ancient wall that, during the ancient time, protected the citizen by the soldiers of other cities. Even if the time and ancient wars worked to destroy the most part of the fortifications, today we can see a part of the ancient bastion called "Sandraccia's bastion".

It was built between the 1370 and the 1375 and even if it's not open to public, we can see it from the street where usually me and my hubby walk to break our day. At a first view, it looks like a romantic tower and you can easely image a Princess there who are waiting her Prince as in a tale, but it was not a really romantic place, because that tower was part of a bastion where our ancient soldiers use to place their arms to defend the citizen from the invasion from other cities.

The architecture of this buildings is really interesting because it has a sort of "shoe" made by river rocks and powdered lime. Inside the bastion there was a sort of embankment to lessen the noise of the cannonball.

During the time some private houses was built very close to the bastion and someone added a window and a sort of balcony to the tower (I don't know why, but this kind of thing happened a lot of time in the past) and so now it looks like a romantic place, but I hope you appreciate this little writing about the history of my city ^_^

Well, time for another cup of hot tea!

See ya

I love walled cities and am happy to live so near one now, though not probably as impressive in walls as yours. Though the Canterbury Cathedral is Breath Taking, I must say!

Walled cities have a beautiful atmosphere, I think. They reminds me the ancient time and how hard that time was, but I als feel myself like in a sort of nest, protected by that big wall ^_^
