The fleet boats of WWII had decks made of a very expensive wood called teak wood. I wondered why they used a furniture type wood for decks. They needed wooden decks, so the crew would not be washed overboard, so that made good sense. But teak is expensive, and that confused me. It was Not done for decoration, because there is nothing decorative on a top level predator! Further digging revealed a very good reason. If a boat is depth charged, and survives, part of the survival could depend on evasion, and if part of the wood deck is damaged, and floats up, the destroyer could spot it, and reacquire the already damaged sub. So, how do you keep the damaged sub safe? Teak is expensive because it is a high density hard wood; high enough density, that it does NOT float! So damaged decks can Not give the evading boat away by floating wood pieces. lol, That would be a good reason. It's probably one of the reasons that it is so expensive as well. My father-in-law does some high-end carpentry, they had a curved staircase to build out of teak. He said you could not steam it to bend like other woods to make it fit, every piece was custom cut/shaped from larger pieces. The staircase was beautiful, but cost more than most people spend on their entire house.

I wanted to make a gun stock from teak, but when I figured the weight, it would be several pounds heavier. I went with walnut for a lighter weapon. Saved a fortune too. **`โกโกโก`**

I knew that teak is supposed to be waterproof. The history of using it on boats is a good lesson. Thanks for teaching me something new today. ๐๐

Modern subs are coated with a rubber layer an inch or so thick, to absorb sonar pulses. They just put grit on that rubber. *`:)`*

howdy this fine Sunday sir Smithlabs! hey is that photo above one of a submarine? the bottom half looks like a sub but the top looks more like a battleship. It goes under water with those guns on top like that? and where did they have the teak wood decks, on the top of the sub for when it wasn't submerged?

That is a fleet boat, and they had Teeth! They did a lot of fighting on the surface. These boats could submerge but they could only stay down for a day or so, before they had to surface. So they were a submersible surface vessel, more than what we think of as a submarine today. Battle surface is never called today, but it used to be all in a days work. The very first rocket attack from a submarine, was fired from one of these teak decks by the USS Barb. They thought he was nuts, now that is the most powerful weapon in a submarines arsenal! A lot of shipping went down due to these deck guns, it saved a lot of torpedoes. *I think there was just a little Pirate blood; **in the crews of these boats**.* *`:D`*

smithlabs! well sir, this is amazing because for some reason I didn't know there were these hybrid type of ships, and they don't have that kind anymore? those deck guns look awesome, what caliper or what kind are those, I mean I see the machine guns but what size were those other guns?

It would be rather expensive to put teak floors in...I did learn something new today, actually two. Teak was one and the other the grit covered rubber.

A WWII submarine would be at great risk today, although on batteries they are hard to hear, and some have been upgraded with modern acoustic armor. These boats, with small modifications, are still a threat; because they are so quiet underwater. Glad you enjoyed! *`:D`*

Thanks, I have been fascinated with submarines since I was in grade school. I am glad you enjoyed the post! :) I have been in every one I could find, and read everything I could about them. I am a little lucky in that there is a fleet boat only 40 miles from here. I have been on a Russian sub (in San Diego), one of ours (USS Batfish), and a German sub (U505). I am still looking for a Japanese sub, and an S boat, not much chance, but I can hope. **`:)`**

Very cool. I love them too. I was able to visit a French one in Paris a couple years ago. I've read lots of U-boat books, and would love to see "Das Boot" some day. I often think how lucky England was that Hitler had only 39 U-boats at the beginning of WW II. If he had had just twice the number he might have won the war!
