El Camino de los Españoles, para ir a pie de Caracas a La Guaira - Venezuela / The Way of the Spaniards, to go on foot from Caracas to La Guaira - Venezuela
<div class=”text-justify”>

>Ávila or Waraira Repano National Park, a spectacular mountain that surrounds the city of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, has many trails to travel through its 85,192 hectares, each with its own particular attractions. This time I present The Way of the Spaniards.

>This route is not only of great scenic beauty, it also has a lot of history, since the Spanish colonizers entered the Caracas valley from there and for some 300 years it was the only road that connected the port of La Guaira with the capital. In 1845 a road was built to connect these towns.

>It is about 18 kilometers long and began to be used by the Spanish at the end of the 16th century, taking advantage of an existing indigenous path.

>It thus became a commercial route, what reached the port of La Guaira was taken to supply the nascent city of Caracas, founded in 1567. The paving that was laid at that time still remains in some sections, sadly many indigenous people enslaved died working there.

>Before going on the excursion I did not have much information about this place, but the guide who took us was in charge of explaining some of its history.

>Apart from being known as The Way of the Spaniards, it was also called: Royal Road, Road to the Sea, Road to Caracas, Old Road or Road to the Port of San Pedro de la Guaira.

>It has several surveillance points along its 18 km, five in total, which were built by the Spanish to defend the port of La Guaira from attacks by pirates and other enemies. Currently only ruins remain: San Joaquín de La Cuchilla Fort, Atalaya or Middle Fort, Salto del Indio Fort, Black Castle and White Castle.

>I went to The Way of the Spaniards one Sunday with some friends and under the guidance of a hiking group. We meet at the exit of the Capitolio metro station in the center of Caracas and there we take a bus to La Pastora.

>Once there we divided into several groups and boarded some jeeps that took us to the starting point of the walk: Puerta de Caracas, there is a Control Post and as this route is within the Ávila or Waraira Repano National Park, we had to register to go up there.

>There is a sign here that indicates that the remains of the Liberator Simón Bolívar were repatriated by this road. Instead of being brought by mule or horse as merchandise used to be transported, they arrived in a cart, the only registered one that circulated that way.

>The Way of the Spaniards from Caracas ends in the town of Maiquetía, in La Guaira, but we didn't get there this time. Also, of course, you can do the reverse from La Guaira to Caracas.
