 [(C)](http://www.hellopiter.ru/Winers.html) In 1829, wanting to perpetuate the memory of his elder brother ,Alexander I, and his victory over Napoleon, the reigning Emperor Nicholas I announced a contest for the creation of the monument for installation on Palace square. In the competition won the project of Auguste Montferrand,  [(C)](http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/51809/15397073.409/0_14a7bf_304e13c1_orig) which is a high column,mounted on a pedestal and topped by a sculpture of an angel. In the work on the monument was attended by the sculptor B. Orlovsky (author of the angel), E. Balin (author of patterns of architectural decoration of the podium), and other sculptors of the Academy of Arts. The story of the construction of the monument, I will omit, as it was already described in detail in the Voice. Let me just say that at the time of creation it was the tallest of the famous pillars made of solid granite monolith. Work on the monument and its installation lasted from 1829 to 1834. Install the column on the pedestal was made on 30 August 1832. Was attended by the Emperor and his family,state dignitaries, military... the square was lined troops (about 100 thousand soldiers and officers). In honor of this event at the Saint-Petersburg mint under the order of Emperor Nicholas I was minted silver coin 1 rouble commemorating the opening of the monument and the monument itself in the history of Russian numismatics.
