The fateful night of November 23rd, 2002 brought boxing fans one of the greatest single fights of all time. The bout between two lightweight contenders of the 90's era finally reached in pinnacle, and its violence was expressed as a dance between two all time great brawlers.

Mickey Ward gave Gatti just about all he could take in their first match just 6 months prior, but the fight was so back and forth with each man having moments that a rematch was deemed absolutely necessary. This eventual trilogy cemented not only Gatti, but Ward as well as two unforgettable legends.

A single fight grounded Gatti as fearless, and a single trilogy showed two men with tremendous heart. The rest of Gatti's career is somewhat a blur, he was always known to cut a bit too much weight and take a bit too much damage, but his heart and spirit in every single bout was evident.

All time greats in Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather cemented their title runs with wins over Gatti, and although Arturo was never the most technical of boxers, he was always given a punchers chance. He was supported by fans everywhere due to his warrior's spirit, and his complete willingness to sacrifice his body for the victory.

The trials and tribulations of Gatti can also be observed by fighters of today, and the paths he took that others should not. The untimely death of Arturo Gatti came in 2009, and I still remember the day vividly. His troubles with drugs, alcohol and relationships has all seemed to catch up to him at once.

The boxing community still misses this absolute legend...I miss this complete warrior. His mentality and soldier's heart was purveyed for all to see, he was a promoter and fan's dream. He never cared about himself in the ring, he did it for the fans...for the victory. Rocky Balboa was real, but his name was Arturo.
