England international Raheem Sterling struck late to spare Pep Guardiola’s blushes last night when Manchester City took on Everton. In a match where the mercurial Wayne Rooney became just the second footballer to Score 200 premier league goals the citizens spent large swathes of the match dominating but showing very little teeth.

Wayne Rooney’s 200th league goal was not enough for Everton to earn a famous victory at the Etihad. The burly Merseysider was roundly booed for every touch of the ball but that didn’t seem to bother him whatsoever when he calmly slotted in a Dominic Culvert Lewin cutback in the 35th minute.

City dominated proceeding early on prior to the opening goal and then seemed to have recovered adequately before Kyle Walker received a quick pair of yellow cards and received a contentious red card for a nasty clash with youngster Culvert Lewin just before the break.

But Guardiola’s men once again found their stride and kept pushing, missing a whole lot of gilt edged chances before sterling blasted in a loose-ball beyond a visibly flustered Jordan Pickford.

Both teams had 10 players on the pitch at the end of the match as Morgan Schneiderlin in a moment of hot hotheadedness earned a second yellow card and received his marching orders in the 88th minute of what was a high spirited encounter.

It is notable that on the 22nd minute mark supporters of both set of supporters joined in a deafening applause to commemorate the victims of the recent terror attacks on Barcelona and Manchester. Also city players wore commemorative jerseys adorned with a worker bee adorned with Catalan colors.

Before this the match had been a tepid affair with the only real chance coming from a rushed attempted by Culvert Lewin. However, not long after City tested Jordan Pickford with Nicolas Otamendi stepping up to shoot hard and low with the keeper only able to parry the ball in the path of an on rushing Sergio Ageuro whose meek attempt toward goal was easily blocked by the covering Phil Jagielka.

Jagielka kept Everton in the affair with more superb defending soon after when some fast thinking and smart running prevented Sergio Aguero from breaking loose after some smart City interplay. Rooney’s 200th came not too long after when he slotted a Culvert Lewin cutback coolly under the arms of Ederson. City controlled proceeding from then on even after the red cards for Kyle Walker.

The visiting manager responded with some smart substitutions bringing on Davy Klassen and debutant Gylfi Siggurdson, but it was ultimately Pep Guardiola’s own substitutes who made the bigger impact with Bernando Silva causing Everton’s backline all sorts of trouble before another substitute Raheem Sterling  smartly secured a point for the Citizens.
