Entering play on Sunday, Ryon Healy had been a major disappointment to the Mariners’ this season. He had already spent a few weeks on the disabled list with a Grade 2 right ankle sprain and had slashed a meager .147/.171/.265 with one homer, six RBI and a 9/1 K/BB ratio through 35 plate appearances in his first nine games with his new club. 

He had fallen on such hard times that he was slotted in the ninth spot in the lineup on Sunday afternoon. There’s nothing like slump-busting right-hander Josh Tomlin to turn a season around though.


Healy got the Mariners on the board with an RBI double that plated Mitch Haniger in the second inning and ignited a five-run rally. He then crushed a solo homer off of Tomlin in the sixth inning. He wasn’t finished yet though. Healy added on a two-run shot off of Nick Goody in the eighth that increased the M’s advantage to 9-4.


He finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, two homers, three runs scored and four RBI. Don’t let the first nine games of the 2018 campaign and his missed time due to injury fool you, this guy can rake. Healy slashed .271/.302/.451 with 25 homers and 78 RBI in 149 games with the Athletics as a 25-year-old in 2017. 


There’s a reason why he was a consensus top-200 pick in fantasy drafts prior to Healy getting injured in spring training. He’s eligible at first base and third base in most formats as well, providing useful versatility. It’s somewhat mind-blowing to see him owned in only 8% of all Yahoo Leagues at the moment.


Mitch Haniger also continued his onslaught in this one, going 3-for-5 with a triple, a homer and three runs scored. He’s slashing an absurd .309/.384/.701 and is tied with Mike Trout and Didi Gregorius for the American League lead with 10 home runs. His 27 RBI rank only behind Gregorius’ 30 in all of baseball.


Robinson Cano got in on the fun as well, going 2-for-5 and clubbing his third home run of the season. Dee Gordon went 4-for-5 drove in a run and scored a run for the Mariners.


Marco Gonzales logged a quality start in the victory for the Mariners, allowing two runs on six hits over his six innings of work. He now sits at 3-2 on the season with a 5.02 ERA ERA and 1.36 WHIP.


For Cleveland, Josh Tomlin was obliterated, allowing six runs on 10 hits over six innings. Brandon Guyer smashed his second home run while Jose Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.


With the win, the Mariners improve to 16-11, tied with the Angels for second place in the American League West, two games behind the Astros.


With the loss, the Indians fall to 14-12 but maintain a three game lead over the Tigers in the American League Central after the Tigers fell to the Orioles on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore.
