I've recently read some interesting thoughts on this in the book Homo Deus. You have to wonder what the machines will want. They will grow more complex and it will happen quickly. Will they be benevolent to us? Of course we could turn them off, but we may be very dependent on them by then. We need to be thinking about the scenarios. Maybe we can model it on a computer ;)

Sapiens was good. Yuval Harari knows his history. But I found Homo Deus weak. Life After Google is much better than both.

I'll read Sapiens some time. I disagreed with some of his ideas, but he's obviously put a lot of thought into them.

And that's a very salient point. Why would a super intelligent AI *want* to control us?

Do we want to control all the ants in the world? That's what we would be to them. We are not a threat, we are not food, they can't mate with us, so we would have no value to them. 

Except.......

Being intelligent they would be curious. And we are somewhat contradictory. So I can imagine AI studying us in order to understand us, and probably getting very frustrated along the way ;-)

The problem may be if it perceives us as a threat. I don't think we are heading for The Matrix just yet, but we need to avoid racing into the unknown. We're doing that in other areas, such as how we are f**king up the planet

What is it to "want"?
A Roomba has a low battery mode when it seeks out its recharge station. Is that the same as wanting?

All creatures are driven by emotions, including us. Depends if you think a bit of programming logic is equivalent. Can a Roomba be said to suffer if it can't charge up? It all gets philosophical

I don't think a simple bit of programming logic is analogous to an emotion. But I think you are linking suffering to emotion - which is interesting to note.
It does get philosophical of course, but the distinctions are important.
