I guess it's not too bad to have Steem news and opinions on trending, but they are largely there due to self votes by orcas and support from their friends as well as the big curation accounts. I would hope this same people are also supporting other types of content. There's plenty of good stuff out there. We need a broader base of people holding SP and there are improvements as some buy more Steem. The charts by @arcange show orcas and whales have more SP being actively used than whales.

That large accounts can self-vote their way up to the top. It's unfortunate, but I also think that this eventually might be downvoted, depending on how frequently these authors are doing this. At least it's what I'm hoping for.
