Jingle Jangle... Gymgle?
Another thing that I plan to talk about from time to time, besides gaming and fitness, is music. But not about music in the more general - I mean that might happen as well - but I want to do something different and talk about songs in particular.

Today I’ll use gaming as my springboard to talk about music a bit - although this is a much, much larger subject that I plan to address someday - and then combine it with fitness. I somehow managed to blend all three in one. Namely, one of the songs from the Fallout: New Vegas soundtrack.

https://youtu.be/1DD_NCM_RJs

I’m talking about Kay Keiser’s rendition of Jingle Jangle Jingle, by far one of the more optimistic and happy-sounding songs off of that soundtrack. It’s always a pleasure to listen to because it has such a light and simple melody.

Well I have it on my phone - amongst many others - and today when my normal gym soundtrack ended, and I still had a few more sets to go, I randomly listened to this song.

And I gotta say that it had the opposite effect of what gym music should do, but it was still a positive.

Now, whenever you listen to music in the gym, the idea is that it’s supposed to psyche you up, get you into a rhythm or simply put you in a more primed state of mind, so that you can push your body to where you want it to take you.

But the thing is, once you’ve been through most of your workout, not only will your body be tired but also your mind.

Proper concentration is a must-have when it comes to exercising, especially if you - like me - prefer to lift heavy weights. Keeping your form on point and focusing so that each set is as good as possible takes a much larger mental toll than people who don’t lift heavy give it credit for.

So today I was feeling rather tired, both physically and mentally. I had a very good day at the gym, but my Metallica gym playlist had already ended - it had served me though the seriously heavy lifts - and now I still had my last exercise of the day to do - 5 sets of chin-ups.

I still needed to listen to music so until I’d switch to my usual choice of hip-hop, I played Jingle Jangle Jingle.

The result was quite unexpected and welcomed.

Listening to the song almost immediately relaxed my mind, and allowed me to take a mental sort of break from everything that happened up until then. It was quite a surprising thing, it was like drinking perfectly chilled water on a summer day. It refreshes you instantly.

My body might have been tired but with a refreshed mind, I could now focus properly on the last exercise.

Not exactly a case of mind over matter, but definitely one in which more mental resources allowed me to push through the body’s lack of resources.

Has anything like this ever happened to you? What song did it for you? Let me know in the comments :)

I loved the soundtrack for Fallout New Vegas. All old songs but they fit the game so well.

Oh yes. I mean, no matter what one thinks about the 3D-era Fallouts, the song choices for the soundtracks are top notch. New Vegas especially so since it's works so well with the Western-type theme. I've been pondering writing an article/video about video games and musical culture (as in knowledge of various types of music) so whenever something like this happens it gives me a bit of extra stuff to add to the idea :)

I absolutely loved New Vegas. I think the soundtrack really added to the atmosphere and world building. This was similar in Fallout3 as well, which was also a great game (bar the initial ending...). The (very) oldies music really added to the game. Unfortunately this trend didn't continue in Fallout4. I've played so much of FO4 but I don't recall any of the songs off the top of my head.

Don't want to digress, but even though I appreciate New Vegas as a more fun game for me, the whole engine was started by Fallout3 which was not a bad game by any stretch.

I use house for workouts, the fast beat brings up my "powerlevel" up somehow. I tried to start learning with Classic stuff like "Bach" in the background, which really made me more relaxed. Not as good as aderal but at least something.

It does depend a whole lot on exactly what it is you're doing. I used to listen to techno when biking - high BPM stuff - for instance, but I'm not a HIIT type person nor do I like doing cardio, so for me it's lifting heavy and listening to a perfectly sculpted Metallica playlist, which I'll detail in a future article ;) For writing I've been recently - for the past year or so - been listening to lo-fi hiphop streams on YouTube.
