Silence is a word loaded with multiple meanings: for many it is a threat, for others it is a nostalgic evocation of a sunset because of technology. For some it is a boredom, and for others, adepts of the ancient arts of contemplation, it is a word of profound importance, even sacred.

But silence, like many other things in the present world, is on the list of endangered species. The presence of noise and stress pollutes more than we think our ability to think.

It's strange how rare the silence has become. Noise and affairs have become the primary elements of our lives. Anxiety dominates everywhere. Whether we ask young people, middle-aged people or retirees, everyone accuses stress and lack of time.

We do not want to have more time, because we run all the time after something (money, material satisfaction, moments of pleasure, etc.). That thing is so slippery, but when we think we got it, it gets us through our fingers and we take it again.

**There are two types of noise:**

*  An objective, of which we can not escape, and which is created by the type of consumerist civilization we all live in. It is clear that we can not avoid the noise of cars, traffic, ambulance sirens, trucks that make up urban life, unless we choose or have the opportunity to live in the country.

* The other subjective, which we choose more or less consciously. We spend most of our time on television, phone, computer or tablet. The avalanche of information comes and passes by us at the speed of lightning, without having taken much of what we received. Our mind spreads in thousands of directions, at one point losing its ability to concentrate. We all have heard of attention deficit syndrome. We live more and more in an environment that some have called the noise of technology. We are informed, we know everything except our souls. Planning, organizing all sorts of activities. Or talk about weather, shopping or the latest show-biz gossip.

**Why do we do all this, why do we surround all of these things more or less necessary?**

Because we're afraid to know our souls. We choose to fill our empty lives with the noise that distracts us, to avoid the silence that can force us to face different aspects of self-knowledge, such as good books, true art, music, that is, real human life. We avoid self-knowledge that would help us to capture the sources of anxiety and despair that is becoming more and more common in our lives. Modern civilization is one of fear. It teaches us to be afraid of tomorrow, the loss of comfort that it gives us to then work stressed to keep it. Could we take a break from this madness, 5 minutes, 10 maybe a day, so we can listen to the silence and what reveals us?

A society that suffers from socially induced attention deficit disorder is a society in a state of disintegration. Focusing on the noisy forefront of conventional media-driven thinking that spreads endless distractions and pseudo-events, most people are lost in a mentally disruptive chaos.

Someone once said that we would also pay the rain drops falling from the sky, meaning that any beautiful and essential aspect of our lives will be destroyed by a society focused on destruction through consumerism and conflicts. Now that the noise and speed have been sold to quietly eliminate us, we have big problems. If we have no peace, we can not think clearly. And mental clarity has never been more important than now.

Gandhi said in an inspired way:

>"In the attitude of silence, the soul finds the way to the light, and what is elusive and deceptive is clearer. Our life is a long and difficult search for truth. "
