I always assumed that everyone knew basic Civics, such as how to treat a US flag, how the government works and the basic origin story of the USA. (Obviously I am a US citizen, but this might apply to any country) I have never been able to grasp the โi before e...โ thing. I take pride in my vocabulary and being to spell things correctly, but this is one of those things that for whatever reason completely escapes me! A little ironic to be sure! Hmmm I have a decent knowledge of Australian government workings and history... But I wouldn't know about a flag. On the other, we don't (in general) have such strong overt patriotic traditions as America. Except after c! As I learn a new language (Dutch), I notice more and more how English is just a chaotic mess...

I was referring to rules such as the flag should never be flown in the rain; if flown at night it needs to be lit; when folded properly in a triangle pattern, the stars should be on the outside and the flag should always be flown with the field of stars to the left. These are the kind of things that people donโt know about the US flag anymore. Nowadays these rules seem arcane, but I like the tradition!
