I was in a car accident last night.

Wait. Let me back up.

My parents drove up to Michigan to surprise my kids for the holiday. Yesterday afternoon, they drove to my house, gathered me and my children, and set out to visit relatives. We had barely left my neighborhood when, while waiting at a stop sign, someone crashed into the back of their car. My father, who was driving, jumped out and asked "What the hell are you doing?!" His response? "I had a lot on my mind."

When we think of distracted driving, we tend to blame texting, makeup application, hair fixing, chatting on the phone, or even children in the backseat doing the things that kids do. We almost never wonder if someone is deep in thought, depressed, or otherwise disengaged with the world around them.

Thankfully, no one was injured, and there was minimal damage to both vehicles. The other driver received a ticket, insurance information was exchanged, and everyone was cleared to return to their day. Before he left the scene, the man told my father, "I'm going home and getting off the road. No more driving for me today."
