Here is a cake I had made for a friend’s birthday. Her husband had ordered a cake and it was difficult to charge a friend, so I said I would make it as a gift. He said she likes all things cute such as Doraemon. She was also pregnant at the time so I thought I would incorporate something related into the design as well.

I started with elements I needed to dry hard first. So I made the 3D letterings, balloons and base  first. Then I started to work on Doraemon. Doraemon alone took me 6 hours. First I made the head and I wanted to create a 3D view of him (I think Doraemon is a he) sucking on the dummy with a cute smile. I didn’t have black wire to use for his whiskers so I painted them black using edible ink pen.

Of course a party cannot go on without a party hat. No idea what I create there, it just happened. The ends of the top bits just seemed empty so I decorated it a little.

Next I made Doraemon’s body, collar and golden bell. The collar I made it in a shape of a flat disk so the head can sit nicely on top. This also creates a nice flat contact surface to glue the two parts together. However I do not trust glue alone as I also used toothpicks to hold the model together.

Of course a baby is not complete without a bottle and nappy. Oops I seemed to have made his diaper a tad too small.

Next I built up my base to create a small picnic area for Doraemon and friends to sit. Before gluing anything on, I created the pieces and moved them around to see which position suited best. My favourite parts of this design are the pigs. I really liked the little pig bum sticking out of the tree and the smiling pig stuck in between the letter ‘U’.

I was a little concerned with the rug colour. It looked like a piece of cheese. However there wasn’t any other colour I could use that would blend in. Originally I was thinking a checkered picnic rug but it would draw too much attention away from everything else. So I left it as a piece of cheese.

I had a little difficulty placing the date numbering along the edge of the base where it would look good. So I decided to make a little white scroll to place them on instead.

Finally I baked a pandan chiffon cake and decided to frost the cake the same colour as the base. Probably not the best idea because I had to use a lot of green food colouring to match it. But it did look better this way.
