Science For The Little Guys: What Is Blood Made Of?

<p>This is one of those gloopy activities where the topic might not be everyone’s favourite subject, but it is something we should teach our kids about. Who knows, we might be raising little doctors and nurses! In this STEM activity, kids and students are given a visual explanation of what blood is made of and what the microscopical particles actually look like. This would be a hit in a biology lesson or it can be done as a holiday activity at home too, to keep little minds busy on long days where there doesn’t seem like there is much else to do.</p>

<h1>What Is Blood Made of? Sensory Play and Visual Learning Activity for Kids&nbsp;</h1>
<p><br></p>
<p>Kids, especially little boys, usually have a huge fascination with blood. I mean, who wouldn't be curious about the red sticky stuff oozing from our bodies, right? It is extremely important that kids know about their bodies, how they function, why they function and what they are made up of. So today I bring to you one "gloopy and gory" blood-themed lesson and activity.</p>
<p><strong>For this little bit of science, you will need:</strong></p>
<ul>
  <li>A sensory tray or a large plastic container</li>
  <li>Red water beads (found at most florist stores)</li>
  <li>Ping Pong Balls</li>
  <li>Red foam sheets</li>
  <li>Water</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>NB.</strong> The gel beads can be a choking hazard, this activity is not suitable for toddlers.</p>
<p><strong>Preparation:</strong></p>
<ol>
  <li>To prep the activity, soak the red water beads so that they swell and expand into gel balls.</li>
  <li>Older kids can help to cut the red foam sheets into tiny rectangular shapes.</li>
  <li>Place the gel beads, foam pieces, ping pong balls and water into your sensory tray.</li>

<p><strong>The Activity:&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>The visual aid is now ready to accompany and elaborate on your explanation of what blood is made up of. Below you will find an explanation suitable for primary school aged children to understand. You can adapt this activity and lesson to according to the age group you are teaching.</p>
<h1>The Lesson: What Is Blood Made Of?</h1>
<p><br></p>
<h3><strong>Blood is made up of four parts, namely:</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Plasma</strong> - refer to the water. Plasma contains water, salts and proteins.</p>
<p><strong>Red blood cells</strong> -the red gel beads.</p>
<p><strong>Platelets</strong> - the rectangular foam pieces.</p>
<p><strong>White blood cells</strong> - the ping pong balls.</p>
<blockquote>Together they make up blood, which is what makes us live and exist. Without blood we will not be able to survive since it plays a role in all of the bodily functions and we need it to stay healthy. Each of the particles that form our blood has a very important job.</blockquote>
<p><strong>Plasma </strong>- helps transport the blood to where it needs to be, using veins and arteries.</p>
<p><strong>Red blood cells </strong>- they carry the oxygen we breathe.</p>
<p><strong>Platelets </strong>- have healing properties and help heal wounds.</p>
<p><strong>White blood cells</strong> - these cells help fight off germs, bacteria and viruses.</p>
<blockquote>Blood is the red fluid that circulates in our blood vessels, i.e.veins and arteries. The main function of blood is to act as the body’s transport system, but it also has a major role in the body’s defense against infection. There is no substitute for blood. It cannot be made or manufactured. Donors are the only source of blood for patients who need it.&nbsp;</blockquote>

<p>This is a super cool way for kids to get a good idea of what the different parts that make up blood look like and how the all move together through our bodies to do different functions. Once the lesson is over, let the students go crazy by allowing them to squish the "blood" in their hands, this will ignite their senses and make learning FUN!</p>
