Today marks the forty-fourth day of this surreal journey of ours. Into the seventh week now of an unimaginable life. A life where you have not one iota of control over any aspect of your existence...not even the breaths you take.

Let me back-peddle a bit. That lack of control lasted just the first two and a half weeks of the journey. After a time, there came a control shift. Sometimes the shift was so slight as to be unrecognizable. Other times the shift was gigantic. Such was the case post trache, when the breathing came naturally, without the aid of machines. That was a huge change in the control dynamic. As the shift turned more and more in our favor, the mind, soul and the light of the man returned home to his body.

There are no connections to any machines now. No staples remain from surgeries. There are no restrictions on diet and the medicines are mostly to maintain health, not to heal. The exception is a pain medicine that is used right before physical and occupational therapy to help with the horrendous pain that accompanies those disciplines.

Rodney is now in an inpatient rehab hospital. He is receiving much needed therapy to get his ravaged limbs moving and functioning again. He has been here one full week and the change is as phenomenal as his recovery has been all along. The legs work just fine and he walks around much as a normal person does, and his balance is unaffected.

The problem remains the arms or more precisely, the elbow and shoulder joints. The shoulders are waking up a bit and starting to become loose. The elbows are excruciatingly painful to range and that is where the focus of the therapy is. It was explained to me that the muscles, ligaments and such have to be ripped in order to stretch out as much as they need to be. That, in a addition to trapped nerves make it truly painful to bend the elbows. He takes the therapy well, and is making progress. He is recently able to hold a cup and drink from the straw. He has touched the top of his head and his face. He can now operate the nurse call button and turn his tv on and off. He works on dexterity and stretching in the gym and also on his own in his room after therapy has finished. He is *very* motivated to recover his life.

So much weight loss, so much muscle deterioration....sometimes I wonder how he even holds himself up. He is gaining strength daily and we pour the food to him, as much as he wants. He expends an enormous amount of energy in therapy, and so far hasn't gained even one pound LOL. The smile in the picture here is more a grimace than a smile, but is dear to my heart and very special to me. It represents *progress*!

The prognosis is good. The patient advocate says that two more weeks at most are needed for inpatient therapy, then a stretch of outpatient visits will be in order. We should get to go home in TWO weeks!!!

It has been grueling, devastating, heart wrenching and at times sad beyond measure. At the same time it has been uplifting, joyous, spiritual and enlightening. What a roller coaster ride it's been.

In talking with the surgeons, doctors, nurses and therapists, the consensus is that he shouldn't even be alive. Less than 10% of people recover from the injuries he sustained and to have come as far as he has and be in as good of shape as he is, is a miracle and a blessing. Apparently, he has an unfulfilled purpose that needs taken care of.

This is part of an update I gave on Rodney's FB page and it also applies to many people here:

Looking at the picture I can imagine the joy you feel. It's been a terrifying journey, but you made it. Hopefully his love of music will make him fight to regain full use of his arms.
Last week, we went to see a movie about Black Sabbath and my daughter told me the story of their lead guitar player, Toni Iommi, who lost the tips of the middle and ring finger of his right hand in an industrial accident at age 17. Obviously, the accident changed his playing style, but 50 years later he is still one of the best guitar players in the world. I assume your son knows this story!

Thank you!!   YES!  You're right!   A very inspirational guitarist!  He knows the story well.   I will mention to him again to see if he remembers it :)   I took a pair of sticks into rehab the other day and they will incorporate them into the therapy this week.   Right now he just has them sitting on his tray/table.

This is the first time I have read one of your posts about your son Rodney. I was very moved by the story.
I too will concentrate on healing, particularly his elbows and arms for the next nine days, and then maybe you could let me know where else I  should concentrate.
I can only try to imagine what emotions you are going through.... I have three sons and a daughter of my own.

I post updates periodically and will continue to do so even after he is released from the hospital. It has been a real roller coaster and tough for you both, but as you say, he survived when the odds were against him and is improving all the time. Determination wins through and I'm sure Rodney will soon have much better use of his arms, elbows and shoulders.

I shattered my right elbow a couple of years ago into 5 pieces, with upper and low arm detached bone wise. At the time I doubted I'd ever be able to lift my arm above my head, brush my hair and do normal things. I now have full movement in it, except it doesn't quite fully stretch, but that is minor with all the damage done to nerves etc, so I'm sure Rodney will fully recover and soon be playing music again.

Sending lots of love and healing for a super quick, easy and painless recovery and soon be feeling fighting fit and doing cartwheels!! :) Much love <3

Oh I am just thrilled with his progress.    I go each and every day to the therapy gym with him and watch them wrench his arms around until the tears stream down his face.   It's hard to watch but he tells them to go further and don't stop.   He really does give it his all.

Wow I cant' imagine your pain either!!   How did you fracture your elbow so completely??   I'm sure your therapy was extensive and long term, right??  The things we take for granted like brushing our hair or teeth!!  Wow <3

I've read this passage to Rodney and he is very, very thankful and appreciative of what you've done on his behalf!!  Hopefully soon he will be able to type on his own :D

Yes I'm sure you are thrilled with his progress, it is incredible and as you miraculous! I still remember your 1st post and I felt your fear about him not surviving, so huge progress. <3 Well done to Rodney for working so hard, he will fully recover I know he will.

Yep that was beyond words painful, I still yet shudders thinking about it now! Interesting story how it happened! In physical world, I was standing with roller blades on about to sit down, in energy it was a huge attack to smash my skull and my elbow saved my skull but got smashed in the process. I was so attacked throughout, long story, operation went really well as I and friends worked on it, but took 4 hours for me to wake up after it was done! There was so much dark attacking me that I didn't go to physio, couldn't deal with the pain and just did loads of healing and exercises when I felt I could. Just having a shower was a full on work out and would wipe me out for hours!! Yes it makes you appreciate your body and all that it does for you. I'm pretty good with my left hand now and still pick up the kettle left-handed, took months to trust my right arm was safe to do that! But all healed now and that was energy work and the body healing itself. <3

When I was in my 20s I'd have been like Rodney, pushing it to the edge and belong and that is a great way to work through it and he will fully recover because he has the will to do so - getting goose bumps as confirmation.

You are welcome Tam, I felt your pain as a mother in despair and I would want all the help the universe could give to me if I'd been in your situation. You and Rodney were a huge part of the healing, if you had believed or had the will to survive then it wouldn't have worked. Together we are all changing the world to be better and I know you and Rodney are and will be a big part of that. <3

FANTASTIC!!! Does Rodney have one side of his body that is better than the other? If so, ask the Rehab team to work his better side first. This is a neuroplasticity technique called Rekinetics. We use movement to encourage new neural pathways to grow between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. If you work the better side of the body first, you will get a 50% gain on the bad side.
Is cannabis legal where you are? If so can you buy some topical lineament? We have neuroreceptors for THC (all the cannabinoids really) in the skin and around all the joints. This could be massaged around the elbows, shoulders and neck before or after physio. The lineament will ease the pain. Please say "hello" to Rodney for me. It's great to look into his eyes. ;)

Isn't it *great*??  He's gaining ground every day :D    It's kinda odd that at first the right side didn't move at all.  It didn't respond to pain stimulation, no movement whatsoever.   The left side arm, leg, toes  and fingers worked just fine.   When he emerged from coma his right side started to move and now is the strongest side.   

Cannabis  was just legalized medically here this year.  I'll check out the lineament   I think it would fit in well with his treatment plan!

It was the very least that I could do. Please tell Rodney that my thoughts are with him. What he's doing now in rehab hurts like hell!!! Shoulder and elbow inflammation is a bitch! Many people would accept not moving the limb rather than doing the work he is to re-train his ligaments, tendons and muscles.
CBD oil is not physchoactive, and can be used quite successfully to treat pain once he's out of the hospital. Many of my chronic pain clients use a CBD coconut oil infusion during the day and a THC coconut oil infusion at night to sleep. Many have been able to get off of all prescription pain meds using cannabis. I am happy to offer guidance or answer any questions that you may have. If it were me, I'd be eating the cannabis infusions in coconut oil because it's neuro-protective and neuro-regenerative. They help heal nerves and brain trauma.

I came to your account after reading that beautiful poem you wrote when your son first had his accident. I am so pleased to see that he pulled through, I know what it is to have a loved one in intensive care and your original post brought me to tears. Thank you so, so much!!  It has been an experience I can't even find the words to describe.   But you would also know that feeling! I am grateful to you for your prayers and well wishes.   He has a long way to go in therapy, mostly for his arms but considering where he came from he's doing remarkably well.   The prayers will come in handy to facilitate that healing.
