Decorating with plastic

@smallsteps is getting pretty confident in herself, which is good to see. I don't remember being confident at any point as a child, except when I was playing sports.

Yesterday we bought a new tree as our last one was white. Yep, we have a plastic tree because even though my wife wants a real one, I told her I am not going to be the one cleaning up the needles inside or through the apartment building when it gets dragged out in January. She agreed. 

We did buy some new decorations though. We have the ones from earlier and they all pretty much match together which I am glad about. However, the more important part was that @smallsteps made the choice, which means she has a sense of buy-in and ownership in the outcome. This is important for a kid's development of independence in my opinion as they get to live with their decisions. 

Low cost lessons whilst young can avoid costly errors later in life. There will always be plenty of ways to fail of course, but making children's mistakes as an adult is not ideal.

She really enjoyed decorating this year and had a lot more patience than last. Once it was finished she stood back and said how wonderful it looks and was content with her accomplishment. When she walks into the room, she checks it over with a glance to see if all is in order.

Of course, the dog isn't left out and has a little vest on, *which he hates* and would normally sulk over. But perhaps it is his age or his desire to make @smallsteps happy, he hasn't complained about it at all. It looks like my wife bought this when he was a size or two smaller :D

I wasn't able to get a good picture of her decorating as for some reason, I just couldn't get the angle right - Perhaps next year. I will try to take some Christmassy images of her to send around the place to those that care later.

Well, now that the tree is up, I am pretty sure that my wife will start lighting candles as if we are performing a demonic ritual and playing Christmas songs no one actually likes listening to.

Not bad for a Sunday though.

I like the decoration side of it, as long as it doesn't go over the top. Last week I was in Amsterdam and enjoyed all the little light displays hidden around the side streets.

Dog still looks grumpy about the vest even if he's not in full on sulk mode XD

I've been told I give my kids too much autonomy and them being used to making their own decisions isn't going to bode them well in the future when they will simply have to suck it up and put up with things they don't like when someone else tells them they have to do things because they just do XD

They have to live with their own decisions and the consequences though (most of the time, I'll usually make decisions for them if they don't have the necessary skills/experience/foresight to see that a decision is going to end badly, and as I have teenagers this becomes a massive point of contention).

What I can see of the tree is looking nice, can you get an angle to show off small's handiwork that you helped with? :D

He puts up with it for her :D

I have heard the same thing abut autonomy, I have also heard that I shouldn't teach her to read or write and count or she will be bored at school. I don't mind her being bored, perhaps then she will find what she really wants to do. 

Teenagers always think they know best, the least we can do is try to give them better tools to use - since they are going to use whatever they have anyway :)

I will have to take some pictures later, but the top of the tree isn't empty ;D
