ROSS, which was built on IBM's computer Watson, was designed to interpret and read a language, conduct research, and build a hypothesis while backing it up with references. ROSS also learns from experiences so it is able to quickly gain knowledge and improve its references the more you interact with it. You can ask ROSS questions just like you would with a colleague. ROSS would then read through the ENTIRE body of law and return a cited answer with readings from legislation in seconds. In addition, ROSS monitors the current law and will notify you if a law has changed that could affect your case.

If you're currently a lawyer - don't freak... ROSS isn't going to be speaking in court or writing contracts anytime soon. ROSS's focus is to present complex information effectively as well as act as more of a researcher to an existing law firm. *The world's fastest researcher - that is*. So while attorneys are figuring out a case - they can use ROSS to fetch any case or piece of information regarding the law in a matter of seconds.

BakerHostetler, a US-based law firm, has been licensing ROSS for use in its Bankruptcy, Restructuring and Creditors’ Rights team since 2016. The chief information officer Bob Craig explains the logic behind hiring ROSS: “At BakerHostetler, we believe that emerging technologies like cognitive computing and other forms of machine learning can help enhance the services we deliver to our clients.”

“BakerHostetler has been using ROSS since the first days of its deployment, and we are proud to partner with a true leader in the industry as we continue to develop additional AI legal assistants,” he added.

Well, a legal researcher isn't exactly a lawyer - and since I believe that in a lot of cases there is also a social component to consider, putting all of that job into an AI might not be a good idea ...

Although some lawyers might also be worse than an AI, as they are masters in contorting the truth ...

In this case, I really wonder, how this will develop (the advertisements make watson look very intelligent and competent - but advertisements aren't really known for stating the truth about a ‟product”).

Very good points, thanks for your thoughts! There will need to be a lot more progress with AI for it to be a threat to lawyers but you never know what could happen in 20 - 40 years.

It is not a lawyer. I understand you used it as a clickbait, but I just want to make sure your readers get that as well. The robot is designed to help users draft legal letters. You tell its chatbot what your problem is, such as appealing against a parking fine, and it will suggest what it thinks is the best legal language to use. Moreover, it is no threat to human lawyers as the software can be used to quickly trawl through and sort vast quantities of case documents. I got the chance to discuss it with a lawyer from https://bsmlaw.com.au/parramatta-lawyers/, and she told me she finds it helpful.
