# With advertising becoming more and more of a nuisance, is it possible to surf the web without any Ads at all?

##### Well, like most things in the tech world, the answer is complicated. But thankfully there is an alternative that most PC users overlook and it is quite possibly the best bit of software you can install on any computer.

##### Up until about 6 months ago, I was a die hard Chrome browser user, not realising what benefits I was missing out on because I simply got to stuck in my ways with using it. And a few years before chrome, I always used Internet Explorer. All the while avoiding FireFox like the plague as it was back in the day a resource hungry beast. But now that I have lived with this new browser for half a year, I wanted to give you all an extensive use review and what it is you will be getting when you make the shift over and start enjoying the sites you visit.

# [Brave Browser](https://brave.com/).
As mentioned, I started using this browser about 6 months ago. The change from chrome was prompted by constant advertising on sites like YouTube, Ebay, Social Media sites and even Google's increased use of directed advertising. It was really starting to piss me off, with every other site I visit having a fucking add about something I briefly searched for 3 days prior. It gave me cause for concern as directed advertisements, although are suppose to be more relevant to you, are irritating as hell, but more importantly is the data that google and other associated advertising vendors were collecting on me. 
With everything going on about misuse of data with private individuals and governments having access to your most intermit details, well, protecting yourself from it can become a challenge in itself. You can avoid all this of course with various software and using alternative search engines, but why do that when there is an all in one solution.

- Brave is not only a light software in terms of how much system resources it uses, but also includes a lot of other features that benefit its users to no end, chief among which is the add-blocking and track-blocking that is built straight into the browser.

### No More Ads.
- While for the most part, Advertising, Popups and tracking is all taken care of, there are a few select sites that will still show you advertisements regardless. These sites are still directed advertising that is based on your use of the site you are on, and the biggest culprit of this is Facebook. Just like Google, Facebook also collects data on your activity while on there site, which helps them to show you appropriate advertisements for you. But I quit Facebook as a general user over a year ago, only keeping my profile alive so I can run and post to Pages I have direct control over. But this may be something to consider if you are wanting to go ad-free.
- But for the most part, Advertising has all but gone from my browsing. I actually used @Deeviras's PC the other day to quickly search something on YouTube, and I was baffled by the fact I was seeing an add before the video. I had almost forgot that YouTube does indeed have adds. While many content creators who use such platforms as YouTube will argue against using software like this, as there sole income comes from viewers clicking on those said adds, the benefits to the general user are far greater than an idiot in a pink suit, surfing on a truck in a desert, getting 0.001 cent per click.

- With having no advertisements to load and no sites tracking your actions on the web, not only will you enjoy surfing the web more, you will be able to do it much faster than any other browser currently available. This is of course all possible thanks to not having to load extra content on the pages you visit. Each add and popup takes up data that has to be downloaded to your PC, if you stop it from having to be downloaded, the page will download much quicker. Simple.
- A side effect to blocking ads and trackers is the reduced risk of your PC becoming infected with Malware, Spyware or Ransomware as your PC is no longer being tracked by multiple sites and any harmful software that can be downloaded through an add is blocked at its source. Combine the fact that brave uses HTTPS connections when possible means more of your connections and data is encrypted, protecting your personal data even further.

## Extras.
- #### Search Engine.
The basic browser comes preloaded with a bunch of features that you can take advantage of straight away. One of which is the search engine options. Typically the default for Brave is Google, but there are far more too choose from in the settings which you can set as default, from DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Qwant, FindX, Wolfram Alpha and a whole bunch more. But if you are serious about keeping your personal information secure, DuckDuckGo is the only option you should choose.

- #### Security.
Brave allows you to set it up in such a way that it can clear different types of data each time you close the browser down, ranging from cache and browsing history for that session, to autofill data and passwords if you so choose so. 
There is also a password manager that you should take advantage of. While nothing goes on inside Brave without your say so, protecting your passwords and being able to manage them is all the more vital, especially for those of us who typically use the blockchain on a daily basis. Brave does have its own built in password manager, but if you do a lot of switching between machines, you may want to consider one of the third party options that works seamlessly with the browser and stores your passwords off site too.
Brave is so committed to blocking ads that it comes default that all brave ads that would otherwise appear on other sites, comes turned off.

- #### Plugins / Extensions.
The only real issue with brave is the Flash has to be installed externally if you want to visit sites that still use the software, which is where chrome only beats this browser as it is pre installed. But aside from having to spend 2 minutes installing the third party software, there really isn't any other plugins needed.
There are however a few extensions that some of you may want to consider turning on, but are for more advanced users. But some of the extensions are 1Password which is a password manager, Honey will find and apply coupon codes when you shop online, MetalMask is for Ethereum Altcoin related applications. Torrent view and PDF viewer, among others.

# Conclusion.
I am so used to Brave, I actually find it difficult putting up with another types of browser. Being able to watch YouTube after YouTube video without having to watch or see a single advertisement is awesome. But it isn't limited to just a select few sites, it is every site that uses ads with the odd exception here and there. Web pages load so much quicker and I can get more done without being pissed off having to dig my way through adds to get to the information I want.
Compared to other browsers, Brave is still fairly new, and as such, it receives constant updates. Which is only a browser restart to install them.
Apart from the ads, the best thing I like about the browser is the ability to view / snoop other tabs that are open, without having to click on them, but by hovering the mouse over them. Initially this was a little annoying, but after a short while, I found it very useful as I do tend to have over 10 – 15 tabs open at any one time.
Also, as I said I came from chrome before I used Brave, but I found that nearly all the keyboard shortcuts that work in chrome, work in just the same way in Brave.

The creators of Brave are always adding to the browser to help it work better for its users, unlike others which use it for there own benefit, which I think is awesome. They even added payment options so even though you don't see adds any more, you can still support your favourite content creators. Now that is customer focused awesomeness.
