<p>I tell you the story which happened in thirties of the twentieth century. Now it is impossible to prove whether the story is true or false, but it is of no importance for me personaly. The only thing that matters is the treasure of a person’s heart, the heart which is not influenced by the lack of money or tired boots.</p>

<p>I believe it is better to tell this story in the first person’s narrative, because it will help me to describe all the emotions of the characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“My brothers don’t remember our father. He died when they were two and three years old. I was seven. To tell you the truth, I often ask myself, if I will remember my mom…We see her only in the morning and late at night because she works all day long. She works hard. She works six days a week. We gather only on Sunday. We go to the church in the morning, after the church we walk in the park and then we have dinner. At the table we discuss our school success, relations with schoolmates and some other stuff. I know mom loves us more than anything else in the world and she wishes to be with us every minute of her life and watch us grow. She wishes to see us laughing, playing in the street, doing our homework, reading books, but she can’t. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Though sometimes we have only a few potatoes for dinner and our clothes are being mended many times, we are the happiest family. We have a great affection for each other. My brothers are eight and nine years old now but they perfect at caring of me and our mother, they are little gentlemen, if I can say so. Sometimes they help in the grocery and Mr. Dunth pays them. They feel happy when they give their earned cents to mom. We try to help our neighbours. Mrs. Jane is our neighbor, she is old now and has no relatives. I know she needs our help and attention.&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>Несмотря на то, что очень часто на обед у нас всего несколько картошек и наши вещи в заплатках, мы очень счастливы. Мы любим друг друга. Моим братьям сейчас восемь и девять лет, но они прекрасно умеют заботиться обо мне и маме, они эдакие маленькие джентльмены. <p>Well, the story I’m going to tell you happened last winter. We were in the church as usual and our dear pastor announced that the community is going to prepare special donations for one poor family. The donations would be gathered in two weeks and church would present that family with the money right in the Christmas Eve. That was a great idea! All of us were inspired to hear that news. Our mother was happy thinking that we could help someone. We rushed home to make a special plan how to earn some more money. We decided to eat only potatoes for these two weeks. My brothers agreed to spend more time in the grocery helping Mr. Dunth. And I visited some of our neighbours. I told them the news from the church and they agreed to “hire” me. So I decorated their houses for Christmas. I should say that it was an amazing time! Every day we counted dollars and cents we earned and thought about that badly off family. They would be happy to get such a nice present for Christmas.&nbsp;</p>

Мы были в церкви по обычаю, и наш пастор объявил, что община собирается принести особые пожертвования, которые будут переданы одной бедной семье. Пожертвования будут приниматься две недели, а затем церковь подарит собранную сумму этой семье в качестве рождественского подарка. Это была чудесная идея! Мы были вдохновлены данной новостью. Мама была рада от мысли, что мы сможем помочь кому-то. В тот день мы торопились домой, чтобы обсудить план, как нам заработать больше денег. Мы решили, что все две недели будем есть только картошку. <p>Two weeks passed. We counted all the money we saved. 80$! Wow! My mother went to the bank and changed the coins to new paper dollars. We must do our best when we help people. That was the reason why we changed coins and old massy bank notes to new beautiful ones. &nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>Две недели пролетели. Мы посчитали все деньги, которые мы смогли сэкономить. 80$! Ого! Моя мама пошла в банк и поменяла старые купюры и монеты на новенькие красивые доллары. Когда мы делаем для людей, то должны все делать лучшим образом, как для себя. Именно по этой причине мы поменяли плохие купюры на новые.&nbsp;</p></blockquote>
<p>On Sunday we woke up early in the morning and went to church. We were happy to donate the money. We went home after the preach. It was dinner time and again we had few potatoes for dinner. It was all right because that poor family really needed money and we had done everything to help it…We gathered round the table and shared our joy, but suddenly there was a knock at the door. My mom opened it and we saw our pastor. The pastor came in smiling; he handed a white envelope to mom and said: “Let Jesus be with you. Merry Christmas!” Then he said good bye and left our house. There was silence. We stared at each other guessing what had just happened and what was in that envelope. Our mom opened the envelope and found one hundred and twenty dollars. Moreover, there were our new banknotes! Eighty of one hundred and twenty dollars were ours…&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>В воскресенье мы проснулись рано утром, и пошли в церковь. Мы были счастливы пожертвовать деньги. После проповеди мы пошли домой. На обед у нас снова было несколько картофелин. Но мы не жаловались, ведь та бедная семья действительно нуждалась в деньгах больше, чем мы, и мы сделали все, что возможное, чтобы помочь. Мы сидели за столом, как к нам в дверь кто-то постучал. Мама открыла ее, и мы увидели нашего пастора на пороге. Улыбаясь, пастор протянул маме белый конверт и сказал: «Пусть Иисус вас благословит, с Рождеством!» Затем он попрощался и ушел. <p>The oppressive silence was in the air. <em>We were that badly off family.</em> We were those people who balanced on the edge of poverty. Neither mom nor we had ever considered our family as poor. I thought it was the worst Christmas present, because our brothers and sisters in the church presented us with the awareness of our social status. Poor. We haven’t talked to each other for two days. We spend the weekends in a depression. When there was time to back to school, I noticed that my boots were old and tired. Oh, my classmates wouldn’t even talk with me. People don’t like poor. The school teacher told my mom that one of the boys skipped the classes and fought another guy. My mom and I knew, it was that awful feeling of humiliation which prevents your heart of being open. I didn’t want to go to the church any more, but I got this thought out of my head. I knew that it was just people’s perception of this problem, but God didn’t see us as poor. We were and we are rich as he is rich. &nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>В воздухе повисла гнетущая тишина. Это МЫ были той бедной семьей. Мы были людьми, балансировавшими на грани нищеты. Ни мама, ни мы никогда не считали нас бедными. Я думала, что это самый неудачный рождественский подарок, ведь наши братья и сестры в церкви подарили нам не деньги, а осознание нашей нищеты. Бедные. Мы не разговаривали друг с другом несколько дней. Праздники прошли в полной депрессии. Когда пришло время идти в школу, я посмотрела на свои ботинки и заметила насколько они драные. О, ведь мои одноклассники даже не будут со мной разговаривать. Люди не любят бедных.&nbsp;</p></blockquote>
<p>One Sunday an African pastor visited our church. In the end of the service he said about African people who were so poor that hadn’t got even a roof over their heads. The pastor begged the people in the church to donate some money for African families.&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>Вскоре к нам в церковь приехал один проповедник из Африки. В конце богослужения, он рассказал о бедных африканских семьях, которым нечего есть, и у которых нет даже крыши над головой. Проповедник попросил пожертвовать кто сколько может для этих несчастных семей. &nbsp;</p></blockquote>

<p>We looked at each other at once as though one and the same idea had popped in our minds. Well, in fact all of us, I mean my family – my mom, two brothers and me, thought about one and the same thing. We came home and discussed the idea within a family council. We hadn’t spent the money presented us on Christmas and our family decided to donate the money to the poor African families who had nothing to eat and nowhere to live. We were happy about this idea and we hoped that the little amount of money we had could help at least one family. We waited till the next Sunday. On that day we rushed to church, and when the African pastor asked for donations, we donated one hundred and twenty dollars without hesitation. Later we’ve heard that the total sum of money for African people was two hundred and fifty dollars… Almost half of the sum was donated by us. Were we poor then?”&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>Мы посмотрели друг на друга, будто к нам всем в головы пришла одна и та же идея. В последствии оказалось, что к нам действительно пришла одна и та же мысль, я имею ввиду себя, маму и двух братьев. Мы пришли домой, и созвали семейный совет. На самом деле мы не потратили деньги, подаренные нам на Рождество. Мы решили пожертвовать их бедным африканским детям, у которых нет даже крыши над головой. Мы надеялись, что эта небольшая сумма, которой мы располагали, может хоть кому-то помочь, хотя бы одной семье. Мы ожидали следующего воскресенья. Когда этот момент настал, мы с радостью пожертвовали деньги. Все сто двадцать долларов. Позже мы узнали, что в тот вечер было собрано пожертвований на сумму в двести пятьдесят долларов…Почти половина суммы – наши пожертвования. Ну разве мы бедные?»&nbsp;</p></blockquote>
<p>This is the story I’ve heard. To tell you the truth I was deeply moved by the spirit of that family, by their attitude to life and people. I ask myself, if the poverty is just in our mind and way of life. Can open hearted people be poor? Should we distinguish poverty as a state of mind and poverty as a lack of money as two different things?</p>
<p>Well, now I have more questions than answers. But I’m sure that a person’s thinking somehow affects his or her attitude to money. &nbsp;I think that family could take the money, spend it at once and say: “We are poor, help us, give us some more money. Oh, people are so wicked they see how poor we are but don’t do anything to help us. We are poor don’t you see? Donate some money…” But they didn’t behave like that.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I admire of their open hearts - hearts of gold. And I believe that this story van be a perfect food for thought for everyone.&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>Вот история, которую я когда-то слышала. Честно сказать, я была тронута до глубины души единством этой семьи и их отношением к жизни и к другим людям. Сейчас я спрашиваю себя, является ли бедность всего ли нищета всего лишь нашим мышлением и образом жизни, или нет? Могут ли быть бедными люди с богатым открытым сердцем? Должны ли мы различать бедность как образ мыслей и бедность как отсутствие финансов?</p>
<p>Конечно же, сейчас у меня больше вопросов, чем ответов. Но я уверена, что наше мышление каким-то образом может влиять на наше финансовое состояние.</p>
<p>Я думаю, та семья могла взять деньги, потратить их и сказать: «Да, мы нищие, помогите нам, дайте еще денег. О, люди такие черствые, они видят, как мы бедны и не хотят нам помочь. Мы бедные, разве вы не видите? Подайте на пропитание…» Но эти люди не поступили так.</p>
<p>Я восхищаюсь их открытыми сердцами – золотыми сердцами. Я думаю, что эта история может быть хорошей пищей для размышления для каждого из нас.
