Yes, this kind of culture is obviously horrible. We're in agreement on that @heretickitten. Tradition, especially when including mysticism, can be the death of civilization.

Aye, but I wonder then if it's death, or the time before the life of a civilization.

From my experiences, I notice that complexity naturally accumulates over time.

Things grow more advanced, including life itself, but also civilizations and more.

I think it's more likely that mysticism and tradition is the precursor of true civilization. The sort of civilization that begins to willfully upgrade itself, and even begins to use advanced technology to leave their home planet even.

In this context of course, it certainly depends on what meaning we give to the word "civilization". Likewise, religion is a "savage philosophy". But rejecting philosophy for the sake of religion, would bring about the ruin of a "civilized" society in the sense of respecting ethical standards (as religion has it's own mystical, nonrational, "ethics") etc.

Civilization usually refers to an ethical society, ie more specifically (although here we may disagree) a capitalist "society" rather than a collective, because everyone is legally permitted to follow his own tastes and desires, as well as cooperate with whomever he likes for his own sake, so long as he doesn't physically hurt other individuals. This then gives room to further ethical considerations, which may not be law but personal or customary.
