## The Legacy of Nintendo

To both hardcore and casual fans of video games – not to mention even those who don’t even indulge in this form of entertainment –, Nintendo is nothing short of a titan in the industry. So much so, that just upon hearing their name, you are more than likely to associate it with character and franchises that have stood the test of time: there’s Super Mario, everyone’s favorite Italian stereotype; the Legend of Zelda, where that elf-looking blonde always gets mistaken to be the titular character; Kirby, who looks like a sentient unicorn fart; and, of course, Pokemon, which is a franchise that gives kids all over the world an addiction worse than crack. And that’s just barely scratching the surface of this storied company. Aside from their games, Nintendo has come up with some of the most famous consoles and handheld gaming devices in history. There is the NES, which is an abbreviation for Nintendo Entertainment System, that has become an immortal in the gaming world; Following that is the Super NES, which gave the world the wonders of 16-bit gaming; or perhaps you remember the Wii, which no doubt revolutionized home consoles in the 2000s. As for their handheld consoles, well let it not be said that the Game Boy line was the king back when they still made it. Make no mistake, too, as Nintendo isn’t relegated as this sort of relic from the past; it still cranks out game after game and console after console, ensuring that the world won’t have a shortage of virtual entertainment to this day.

But perhaps what makes the company such an impressive presence in the world is when you realize it is one of the oldest companies in existence. The thing is that Nintendo has been around for more than a century now. Games and entertainment, however, have always been in their blood. Starting off as a manufacturer of playing cards, Nintendo has since become a juggernaut in the gaming industry. As such, it is no surprise, really, to think that the company had had its highs and lows throughout its existence. What resulted from all those challenges, though, is the reward and legacy that being household name carries.

Since we’re on the topic of Nintendo’s career not being a walk in the park at all, I think it’s just right that we talk about it in some detail. For a few years since they launched the Wii U, which the company itself admits failing to meet their expectations, Nintendo has been striving to regain the top spot in the world of console gaming the way they ruled with the release of the original Wii. If it’s a surprise to you because of your attachment to your Sony or Microsoft console, or if you’re one of those arrogant jerks who only play with their PCs, then I’d like to inform you that Nintendo did indeed win that round.

2017 is looking to be one that will make Nintendo gain the top spot again, considering that the release of the Nintendo Switch has been received positively by fans and reviewers alike. Of course, it’s not perfect yet, but it’s just a matter of time before Nintendo tweaks the bugs.
