# February 16 in Christian History #

It was the mid 19th century, and Quintard was a young doctor in Tennessee when he came into contact with a more austere version of Christianity. He fell in love with the rich traditions and profound piety of the Episcopal church.

He abandoned his career in medicine to become a priest, leading a movement to revive the traditional practices and rituals of the church. In a move that was controversial at the time, he extended his ministry to black Americans. 

His career changed radically when the Civil War struck in 1861. Despite his sympathies for the Union, Quintard felt that it was his duty to minister to his local flock. He served as a medic and a chaplain in the Nashville militia. However, his influence expanded far past his state, and he was often referred to as Chaplain of the Confederacy.

After the war, he devoted himself to rebuilding the city. He became active in eduction, and planted a number of universities in the region. These helped the south recover from the desolation of the war. He was later appointed Bishop of Tennessee. On February 16, the day of his death, he honoured each year by the episcopal church. As they remember his story, they read Psalm 94.
