What should be on your mind when driving? Part 1 of 2
**Hello Steemians!**

![images (1).jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVCkxZU9jaLwLL2H3atWQ18bKPNa42qf8ZWLjk8Ax6Jsv/images%20(1).jpg)

Lately, I've been writing traffic awareness and traffic environment related write ups, an article talking about the road crash statistics of the Philippines with assessments and safety tips that you can read in [here](https://steemit.com/philippines/@themanualbot/philippines-road-crash-statistics-driver-s-assessment-and-traffic-safety-tips) and an article discussing about the causes of air pollution in relation to traffic environment and vehicles that can be read in [here](https://steemit.com/cars/@themanualbot/vehicle-emissions-as-one-of-the-major-causes-of-air-pollution-vehicle-tips-for-clean-air). Now, I will give you some important things to ponder when you are driving on and off the road. These are viable guidelines that can minimize human errors on the road making road accidents more preventable. If you are a driver, these are the things you should look for, always and..

**put it in mind all the time when driving:**

## Speed of the vehicle

---

You should always take check-ups on your vehicle's speedometer. This small and round mechanism that is attached on your vehicle displays the speed of your car or whatever you're driving with. This also determines the allowed speed limit on a certain road. If you exceed the speed limit, you're likely violating speed limit regulations on the road.

The speed of your vehicle should be more or less the same with the speed of the vehicles present on the road. It should never be much more than or much less than the allowed speed limit. If you are a driver handling public vehicles on provincial roads and by provincial road means less road blocks and curvy intersections and turns, the allowed speed limit is 80 kph and while riding commercial vehicles like trucks, the allowed speed limit is 50 kph.

For some busy streets like intersections, highways and boulevards that are likely more busy than commercialize rural areas and roads, the speed limit of public and private vehicles is 40 kph and while on commercial vehicles, 30 kph will do.

And lastly on some streets that has greater volume of population where schools are structured, markets, factories and industrial areas, the speed limit is 20 to 10 kph for private and public respectively.

## Distance from other vehicles

---

Some drivers are so fond on tailgating. It is a bad attitude of a driver where he or she keeps his bumper closer to the vehicle next to him or her. Don't be like those crazy drivers. The minimum distance of a car from the car next to it is the length of that car tailgating the other one. In this way, accidents maybe more preventable especially when sudden breaks of cars will happen on the middle of the road.

For some cases like riding on a motorcycle or motorbikes, the distance from other vehicles should be greater than any other vehicles front running. It is because motorbikes take more time to slow down on the road.

Another way to monitor your vehicle's distance from other vehicles is by taking into consideration that the speed of all vehicles present on the road. When on highways, where traffic is from moderate to heavy, monitoring your distance is easy than highways where vehicles run freely with speed ranging from 30-40 kph. Some would distance theirselves from each other more even at 10-15 kph. That should be done well.

## Following the right road lanes and lines.

---

The line dividing the road does not indicates direction. This line is a simple guide for drivers to run their vehicles in a right way. There are many types of lines on the road and has different colors and precautionary informations.

First would be the white line on a one way road. These are lines dividing a one way road and separating vehicles from other lanes on that road.

Next is the yellow line. Yellow lines have different forms. The solid yellow line indicates separation of vehicles taking different directions or the opposite way. A solid yellow line indicates also that over taking or counter flowing on that certain road is prohibited while the broken yellow line permits vehicles in doing so.

The best thing to do regarding lanes on the road is to maintain the position of your vehicle or the lane you are taking especially if you're not bound to take turns or doing unnecessary over takes. Taking turns at different position that are not needed will be more likely the cause of accidents on the road. Or somewhat may cause some road arguments and heat between drivers.

For a road that has 2 or more lanes, vehicles should stick to the right to give more way to other vehicles when overtaking to the left. While for roads that can accommodate single-laned vehicles, drivers should be patient and avoid taking over takes and counter flows. It is okay to take those risks provided you'll get enough clearance on the road.

For motorbikes, they should be taking the left side of any lanes because most part of the lanes especially on the center, oil may spill. This may be the cause of some motorbikes accidents because oil makes the road slippery.

## Right of Way

---

It is clear that right of ways are practice if there are law enforcing body present on the roads and streets. If there are none, a well-mannered driver will deliver the act on practicing or implementing the right of way on the roads.

If you came from an intersection or came from a parking corner and you were about to enter the road, you should wait for vehicles to pass by the road or should give them the right of way as they were on the road first than you. Especially on intersections, vehicles that were almost at the center of the road or intersection should be given the right of way. If two vehicles took the intersection or the lane at the same time, the one on the right part of the lane should have the right of way.

Some intersections where taking right turn is allowable, the vehicle taking the opposite direction should have the right of way and the vehicle taking the right turn should wait for that vehicle to pass by. Extra care must be observe also, taking quick turns can cause accidents.

Lastly, when you talk about right of way, pedestrians must have the full rights on the road. When pedestrians take the right crosswalk signs, vehicles should let them pass the entire highways.

To be continued...

---

So that's the first part of my new write up about traffic awereness and road management. I hope you find this new article very informative. Don't hesitate to pour your questions on the comment sections. Happy Steeming!

You might downvote me on this but ahahahaha the first thing I had in mind when I read your post is the song *you're always on my mind from the time I wake up til I close my eyes*. Hahaha Jeez Johanna Gail

But on a serious note, my mind tend to be blank when driving my car so that I could focus on the road alone.

I think one of the most important things to keep in mind while driving is to share the road. I mean most accidents occur because people just want to have the road for themselves. Not giving way to others is one of the flaws I see here in the Philippines.

I totally agree with you @brokemancode. There are some stupid and reckless drivers in the road, driving like they own the whole street and that's rampant in the Philippines.
