Wild Bird Pool Party on a Warm September Day, 2018

<h2>That was one wild pool party yesterday!</h2>

A warm September afternoon brought some of the area's hottest birds to the birdbath, and while I recognized most of them from previous parties, I had to get out the _Peterson's_ field guide to identify a few of the visitors.

<h3>First, the smartest bird in the forest showed up for a splash; the _brown thrasher._</h3>

<h3>The brown thrasher is said to have the largest vocabulary of all of the birds in this region, and even knows more songs than the mockingbird, making it the smartest songbird in the Ozarks.</h3>

Next, the popular finches showed up, beginning with the cardinals.

The next bird I didn't recognize. Grey with distinct yellow bars on the wings, and unique yellow marks on the tail feathers. According to the Peterson's guide, it's a female redstart warbler:

Ahh… I like the brown thrasher. At first I thought you were going to make up the names while commentating but quickly realized ‘Brown thrasher’ must be his given name. My mom and grandparents love bird watching and are constantly telling what birds they saw for the day (I never have any idea what birds they are talking about 🤷🏼‍♀️). Very cool @therealpaul !

Yeah around these forests, if you hear what sounds like handfuls of leaves being tossed around in a thicket somewhere nearby, it's probably the brown thrasher, 'thrashing'. Bigger than a mockingbird, but similar, and related; thrasher, mockingbird and the catbird, are the 'mimic thrushes'. There was a time when I'd go looking for birds and wildlife to identify and study, now I can just point the camera out the window!

Truly blessed! Our neighbor used to have a cheapo hummingbird feeder hanging from his house and I swear, about 20-25 birds would buzz around that thing until the sugar water was gone. He couldn’t keep that feeder full… it was really neat to watch though. We could all sit out there for hours just tripping on the thirsty hummingbirds. Being around nature keeps us grounded, I bet your domain is quite peaceful with all of those critters around.

They do hang out in the garden, the red cardinals sometimes pecking holes in the tomatoes, the varmints. I don't know all of these bird's songs, but cardinals and jays I can hear all around me here during the day.
