Black - 100 Days of Poetry Challenge Day #42

This poem might have some strong undercurrents but I want to say now that I mean no harm by it and I simply wrote how I felt after a long day of taking crap.

I'm black
It is who I am
I can't change it
I won't change it
Even if I could

You see
They say
The colour of your skin
It doesn't mean jack
We're all the same inside


Are we all the same inside?
Really, are we?
The colour of our skin
It means nothing?
We're all flesh and blood
We're all muscle and bone
But the colour,
What does it mean?

I don't know
But here's what I'm sure of

I'm black
I'm different
Black is different
Black don't crack
Under pressure
Black, it's fiercely loyal
Black has heritage
And black is proud

You may stare down your nose at me
You may turn the other way
When you see me coming
You may spit in disgust
At the colour of my skin
But  let me tell you now

Black don't care
My head will never be bowed
My shoulders
They'll never droop
I'll never cast my eyes downwards

I'll look you straight in the eye
And I'll poke you in the chest
Strong enough to leave a dent
And then I'll tell you
That I don't care
What you think or feel
About the colour of my skin


I'm black
And it is who I am
I can't change it
I won't change it
Even if I could.

Great poem. I agree white and black are different, because our worlds are different from birth, it may not always be that way, but it is right now. Our differences are what make us strong and beautiful and you are definitely both. 😎

Black and proud. As a fellow black, I understand and can associate with the standpoint of this poem. Black is not just a skin colour, it's a force running through our veins as a result of past experiences.

Good poem and strong theme. I like the strength with which racial integrity is defended, very discriminated in many parts of the world.
