Day 3 Antarctic Expeditions on the M/V Island Sky

Our second sea day on the Drake Passage, which is by far the smoothest crossing of the Drake I have had this season. I do believe the Drake passage owed us this one smooth crossing. However, I have spent about 5 hours outside on the outer decks scanning the horizons for my beloved whales.

I did get the opportunity to present my other marine mammal lecture, amply named *“Introduction to Pinnipeds.”* It always draws a lot of interested guests wanting to learn the basics of what this type of marine mammal is all about, which is seals and fur seals. My lecture focuses on the physical and behavioural adaptations that seals have undergone in order to survive life in remote harshness of Antarctica. That and how to identify the various species we will be likely to encounter the next few days on the peninsula.

The one major thing about this expedition that has been different to other trips is that there is a stomach bug floating around amongst the guests and expedition staff. **THREE STAFF** have gotten it in the last 2 days. As a result of their *infection* they have been quarantined in the sick-bay in order to reduce any more spread of this stomach bug amongst other guests and staff.

What do we do in order to prevent the spread? Wash your hands constantly with the available hand sanitizer on every deck. Im not a big fan of hand sanitizer BUT I would rather use it then pick up the bug that some of my colleagues have been infected with.

Tomorrow morning we are expected to be on the peninsula tomorrow morning at 6am and will be exploring via our zodiacs shortly after breakfast. I am not sure how I am going to get to sleep tonight knowing I am going to be in my happy place tomorrow morning for the next 3 days!
