 和太阳能发电的概念类似，会发电的壁纸也不是什么新的概念吧。由帝国理工学院、剑桥、中央圣马丁学院组成的研究小组发现，蓝藻可以用作墨水，它能够以精确的图案从喷墨打印机打印在导电的碳纳米导管上，也可以打印在纸上。在印刷过程中，蓝藻可以存活下来，并进行光合作用，产生少量的电能。 用含有蓝藻细菌的生物墨水和纸制作出来的生物太阳能电池板，有着类似壁纸的外观。一块 iPad 大小的电池板，就可以为一个简单的数字时钟或是 LED 灯泡供电。 生物太阳能电池其实并不是一个新鲜的概念。此前，已经有人提出了苔藓光伏发电系统，通过水凝胶和导电碳纤维组成的无土基质，一组种植苔藓的立面中空模块化墙砖就构成了一个完整的生物电运行系统，可以收集电子并发电。
