Energy, technology and economy, where is the key?

## Hello friends of Project Hope ..!

I bring a new topic for discussion and reflection in the area that I like the most, technology and engineering. In this case, I will talk with you a bit about the complex relationship between energy, technology and the economy in some of our countries.

As I already mentioned in one of my first posts in this community, in terms of renewable energies it is possible to produce electrical energy from solar radiation or what we know as photovoltaic energy, from water and this is what we know as hydroelectric energy, wind energy and bioenergy or biomass.

Obviously renewable resources in these cases are available almost anywhere in the world: water, biomass, sun and wind. So it can be used on a smaller and larger scale.

But in terms of development we will find that photovoltaic energy has achieved great advances and applications until now. And the other case is wind energy, which in a way is booming in developed countries.

![separadortocho2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmc7zJBjB36FthzRxDjYjv71kjUJu2X5GQyuTfaktyPAKj/separadortocho2.jpg)

### And where is the detail?

We know that renewable energy alternatives come up from the need to generate electricity at a lower economic cost and at a lower social and environmental cost.

But the cost of production of these energy modalities is still high today, for example:

* Photovoltaic panels are effective only in cities/countries that have many hours of sunshine at certain times of the year. These panels are not economical and a large number of them are required to gather the amount of kilowatts necessary in a house or to "start up" some equipment, and if you want to supply yourself with this solar energy in "night hours", you must make an additional investment in a storage battery bank.

![paneles280121.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmarPGk9SGp4wxntD4afNQzTLpZZFbkVGv1zHhPmdJ518y/paneles280121.jpg)

Free use [Resource from Pixabay](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/lesoto-bergdorf-energ%C3%ADa-solar-927581/)

* In the case of wind energy, it is obviously also effective in those cities where the wind speed and its geographical location are sufficient to make it feasible as a project, and it is important to note that these wind generators are very expensive and very large dimensions (average 15 m height for domestic use) and we are talking about the need for more than one generator.

* One of the most complex cases is hydroelectric energy, because, for example, to supply a region of a country, a hydroelectric complex must be built and this involves a large investment by the nation. Although there are hydroelectric generators for domestic use in the market, but the determining factor is in the availability of a nearby water source such as a lake, river or rill.

![gurivzla280121.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmay9iZdwXKXnGVvYFY9KrxMYDPPR3xJjAYGizSQ1ckyuK/gurivzla280121.jpg)

Hydroelectric power station "Guri", Venezuela. [Resource](https://www.venezuelatuya.com/guayana/guri.htm)

* The last case to point out is energy from biomass, where for the different types of obtaining this energy: thermochemical and biochemical, a large investment in equipment is necessary to develop the energy generation process.

But let's not see this as limiting, this is part of the feasibility principle of any project based on these initiatives. These projects are viable as long as they are sustainable and "maintainable" in time, and as long as the main "source", be it water, wind, sunlight and biomass, is also available in time, not to say "inexhaustible".

![separadortocho2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmc7zJBjB36FthzRxDjYjv71kjUJu2X5GQyuTfaktyPAKj/separadortocho2.jpg)

I think that the key is that although we all know that these renewable resources are available in nature for "free", the above described is evidence of how expensive it is to invest in equipment, facilities and generation platform, it is the cost of "technology", so that consequently if we talk about energy for an entire city or population, these costs will somehow be passed on to citizens as a bill for services.

However, this form of renewable energy generation is still feasible, because “the other side of the coin” shows us that we would be contributing significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions and highly polluting gases present in other electricity generation alternatives.

Finally, I ask you, if the decision was in your hands between producing renewable energy at a high cost and contributing to the reduction of polluting gases into the atmosphere, leaving aside the conventional forms of electricity generation ...

#
>… Where would you incline the scales?
