One of the worst effects of the corona virus outbreak is evident in world economy. To control the spread of the dreaded disease, many cities round the world have been locked down to reduce community spread. This step has crippled many businesses, and economies of nations, leading to massive job losses, even in the topmost economies in the world.

Some of the news headlines trending are news like [Record 20.5 million American jobs lost in April. Unemployment rate soars to 14.7%](https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/08/economy/april-jobs-report-2020-coronavirus/index.html) and [UK unemployment: Two million people have already lost their jobs amid coronavirus crisis](https://www.express.co.uk/finance/city/1267231/uk-unemployment-rate-latest-furlough-coronavirus-update-institute-for-employment-studies), as over 6.5 million job losses are being projected in the UK. The situation is not different in Germany. According to [iamexpat.com](https://www.iamexpat.de/career/employment-news/coronavirus-record-101-million-workers-germany-put-reduced-hours), "figures show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefits rose by 308,000 in March, taking the overall total to 2,644 million."

One can only imagine what the future holds for these people who are losing their jobs, and business, and their sources of livelihood. For countries that have organized systems, records and databases, it might be easier for them to salvage this situation through financial aids, and creation of new jobs when lock down is lifted. For developing nations however, the situation could get worse, and major victims of this economic instability will need new ideas to help them overcome this new reality.

In Nigeria for instance, the people who are still considerably less affected by this situation are government workers, essential workers, and those whose jobs allow them to work from home. My heart is heavy especially for teachers who work with elementary and secondary private institutions. Firstly, this set of people are poorly remunerated, yet, they get even much less, or nothing during holidays. These are some of the worst hit people in the country, especially those who among them have families to take care of.

The unemployment rate in Nigeria as at November 2019 was about 23.1%, as the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) also warned that this might hit 33.5% in 2020, before the outbreak of the coronavirus. It is yet unkown how much more this unemployment rate might be hit with the coronavirus.
