한국형 느와르 영화의 새 장을 연 작품입니다. 묵직한 사내들의 세계가 신세계가 되어 펼쳐집니다. 시종일관 흐르고 있는 검은색의 화려함, 작품은 어둠의 세계를 형상화시켰지만, 너무 스타일리쉬하고 아름답습니다. 

"어이, 브라더. 동생은 딱 이 형님만 믿으면 돼야" 황정민의 동적인 연기가 돋보이는 작품입니다. 능청맞고 너스레를 잘 떨며 다정하지만, 일에 관한한 철두철미한 암흑가의 보스역을 너무 잘 소화해 냈습니다.

최민식, 황정민, 이정재등 화려한 라인업과 느와르의 분위기를 한껏 살린 진중한 영상이 많은 관객들의 호평과 관심을 이끌어 내며 멀리 헐리우드까지 작품성을 인정받은 영화입니다.

골드문, 전국구 규모의 폭력배를 규합해 만든어진 중견 기업입니다. 다양한 이권에 개입하며 세를 넓혀가는 중, 조직 보스의 갑작스런 죽음을 맞이하게 되고, 분열된 조직내 세력들은 보스를 자리를 놓고 서로를 견제하게 되는데요. 

경찰은 골드문의 이러한 세력확장이 마음에 들지 않습니다. 급기야 조직내에 경찰을 스파이로 활용하며 골드문의 정황을 살피기에 이릅니다. 이자성, 그는 골드문에 잠입해 조직내 거대한 두 계파중 하나인 북대문파의 수장 정청의 오른팔로 활동하게 됩니다.

하지만, 정청이 상해로 떠나기전 공항에 잠입해 있던 경찰들과 맞딱뜨리면서 의심을 품은 정청은 해커를 동원해 스파이를 찾게되고 골드문내 이자성의 위치가 탄로나고 맙니다. 그리고 영화는 점점 조직내의 암투와 경찰의 이간질, 그리고 두 사람의 우정이 주를 이루며 깊은 이야기를 풀어가고 있습니다.

스타일리쉬합니다. 멋진 장면과 화려한 영상이 많은 볼거리를 제공하는 작품입니다. 특히나 엘리베이터 씬은 국내뿐 아니라 헐리우드에서도 크게 감탄을 했다고 하는데요. 올드보이를 촬영했던 정정훈 촬영감독의 장점이 물씬 느껴지는 명장면입니다. 

홍콩 영화 무간도를 차용했다는 비판을 듣기는 했지만, 신세계는 무간도가 지닌 서사와 함의를 뛰어 넘었다는 평가를 들었습니다. 국내 최고의 배우들과 시나리오로 영화계에서 잔뼈가 굵은 감독의 연출, 무엇보다 한치앞도 알 수 없는 숨막히는 스토리의 힘이 대단한 작품입니다. 

신세계에는 무엇이 있을까요. 그리고 과연 골드문은 누가 이끌게 되는 걸까요. 정의를 실현하는 일과 우정이라는 딜레마의 한가운데에는 과연 무엇이 있을까요.
