Technology

Technolgy in the workplace has empowered workers to increase their productivity. Improper training, employee resistance to change and overall ignorance of product power has stifled technological prowess in the workplace. How can we fully empower our new hires and experienced employees to use existing systems? As a manager, how can we avoid the Luddite effect and help our employees use technolgy to the fullest in our business?

Powerful technolgy including artificial intelligence can be used to increase our productivity. Automation, analytics programs and more are there to help us succeed, but why have we not fully embraced their power? Management needs to identify those who will use software and hardware advances and not resist their utility. This is a huge part of the problem. Stay current with training, and support applications in your internal IT Department. Product support is essential so applications that employees have issues with do not sit idle or go unused.

A good analogy to those who do not embrace technology are the Luddites. The Luddites were craftspeople who disliked the implementation of weaving technolgy in the later 1700s in Great Brittain. Even though the weaving and cloth-manufacturing technolgy would ultimately make these workers more productive, they actively opposed new technology. A part of this was that they were preserving their craft and did not want to see their jobs devaluated or eliminated. In today's world, as a technolgy manager at work we need to avoid giving workers the idea that new technolgy will take jobs and educate employees on their core competencies. A new technology helps a subject matter expert best use their time. It takes the mundane away and leaves the brain work that is engaging.

We need to empower employees to use technolgy by investing in their training and by selecting employees who will embrace technolgy. Management needs to set KEIs and requirements to use systems at work and communicate this to new hires to set the tone. Enterprise management systems and process automation need to be maintained and all new hires need to be adequately trained by the vendor or a trained site trainer. If we are to fully realize productivity goals by using technology in the workplace, whatever it may be, we need proper training and accountability in the workplace.

If you work in an office, clinic, factory or restaurant we need to embrace powerful technolgy. I have worked at places where employees actively rejected new technolgy and the business suffered for it. If you are a manager make sure to hire employees who are open to change and pre-screened to succeed in your workplace.
