Past Friday and Sunday I watched this interesting classic cyberpunk duology about androids with human emotions that are chased by elite elements of the human police called "Blade Runners". I saw them in disorder; I mean, on Friday I saw the second movie and the first movie this Sunday. However, if there is something great about this duology is that, in a way, Blade Runner 2049 can be understood even without seeing the first movie; however, it is better to follow the recommendation to watch the first movie before to have a better understanding of those dystopian futuristic cities.

This duology addresses several aspects, from the (bad) use of technology for human need to the rhetorical question that perhaps has been seen in other films such as Terminator and I, Robot: Can machines get to feel emotions?

The answer, far from being ambiguous, seems to scare a large part of the inhabitants of the Earth and the Colonies: It is possible. You only need to implant foreign memories. The idea is first explored by Eldon Tyrell of Tyrell Corporations; replicants Roy, Leon, Zhora, Pris and Rachael showed that they are capable of feeling certain emotions, from affection (Rachael) to hate (Leon and Roy). Subsequently, this idea is taken up by Niander Wallace, from Wallace Corporations, and perfects it to the point that it is not so easy to know who is replicant and who is human. Luv, the replicant created by Wallace, is the highest representative of such perfection; the eternal thirst to give the best of herself to please others and the anger she feels at seeing his rival alive were so real that one thinks that Luv is human.

Another theme that caught my attention is the city as a whole. If we look at both films, we notice that the city of Los Angeles is a mega metropolis; Its population is excessive, a homogeneous mixture of social classes. The old buildings are in a state of abandonment and with inhabitants who have few resources to repair them; modern buildings remind of Las Vegas, but with more striking colors and, in the case of BR 2049, with holograms included. A dystopian city where police are everywhere and where corporate seems to have absolute control.

Now, in the technical aspects, the performance of the cast were awesome and the script is a perfect combination of drama and action. The colors, those desolate environments where the events unfold, can tell you many things beyond the story they present.

No doubt this is a "must watch" duology in the repertoire of science fiction fans, especially the cyberpunk subgenre.
