Wait, what? ***Do you actually need more than a day in Ollantaytambo?*** Ha! Good one! Not really. It's muy puequeña so so small. Scrolling around for a few hours and then you're done. Well, it might be something more to it and also for those who has no ideas about this ***small mountain village in Cusco, Peru*** at all and are planning to visit/are on the way to Machu Picchu and stop by here for a night or two, this post would sure help!

### First of all, pronounce it correctly. It's O-YAN-TAI-TAM-BO!
> In Spanish, double L pronounce Y!

### Let's get to it, Ollantaytambo!
Most of the time, people stop by here because they are one the way to Aguas Calientes, the closest town to Machu Picchu. Why: ***Ollantaytambo is the most convenient where you can take a collective here and then take a train from here to Aguas Calientes***. It’s a really really small town in the Cusco region. There are ruins, souvenirs and artisanal shops and a few farms around and of course, load tons of restaurants. 

We spent not that much of a time here but gotta say, we fell in love with Ollantaytambo and we also found a few good spots where we would love to recommend.

### 8 AM - Street food for Breakfast
Never go wrong with street food. ***Great food, good price and we are proud of being able to say, we travel Peru like a local Peruvian***. If you love that feeling just like I do, head to either the local market (there's only one in town) or to the same spot we went to, in front of the Ollantaytambo Ruins entrance. 

A small stall serves ***classic Peruvian breakfast sandwiches and hot drinks***. Peruvian love their sandwiches for breakfast. Nothing fancy really. More like bread with avocado or bread with cheese (S/ 1). Simply delicious just like that and pair it with your favorite hot drink like barley drink? (S/ 1). ***Delicious and filling!***

### 10 AM - Ollantaytambo Ruins
If you love ruins and those kinds of historic places, this an ancient Inca temple/fortress is probably something you would keen to visit. Spoiler alert! ***It's one of the best-preserved Inca ruins in Peru!***

Me: Meh, more like a foodie and literally, I don't care much about any form of ruins so.. Pass! Though, we walked around Ollantaytambo and ***what a pleasure to have met the Incan King, Atahualpa!*** By the way, he says Hi!

### 12 PM - Shopping in Ollantaytambo!
What!? Shopping in such a touristic town? Nah, I'm not much of a shopaholic myself either ***but*** this shop that sells handmade alpaca clothing is unique, reasonably priced, great designed and sure worth visiting!

***Awamaki is an ethical and sustainable shop/tour operator*** in Ollantaytambo. It is ***a non-profit that helps women start and run their own businesses***. It's not the cheapest you can find around but the quality is top-notch and I love their minimal designs!

I got a lovely beanie and one headband from Awamaki that I still use them till these days. Some other few shops offer handicrafts and local Peruvian souvenirs. Support the locals a bit, will you? :)

### 1PM - Peruvian street food for lunch in Ollantaytambo
Again, we can't ever go wrong with street food. This one is also simple but so delicious! I don't know how they do it. ***Ensalada de Palta or avocado salad***. A small plate comes with a good amount of avocado, potato, yuca, tomato, and onion salad. One plate cost us ***S/ 3 or a bit less than a dollar!*** 

It's delicious, healthy, and really filling. If you would love to grab one, head to Ollantaytambo Plaza de Armas or the main square. It will be easy to find, there are always local circling up around the lady who sells it!

### 2PM - Hang out with alpacas at secret farmland, El Albergue!
You know alpaca is such a big thing here in Peru, right? They eat them, they wear them and yes, they love and they are proud of their alpacas.

I happened to like alpacas while traveling in Peru too. It's just impossible to not fell in love. They are cute and fluffy. Their eyes are big and round. They would even groom you (if you're lucky to be close to the friendly ones.)   

***[El Albergue Farm](https://www.waybeyondpadthai.com/el-albergue-farm-ollantaytambo/)*** is not exactly hidden but there are not many tourists who know about it or go visit. It's a 20-minute walk away from Ollantaytambo's main square. ***Not just alpacas but Lovely animals, pretty flowers, coffee roastery, and distillery***! So much to do and see that a few hours would fly by easily. Great find, indeed!

### 3PM Afternoon coffee and coffee roastery tour

As mentioned, El Albergue is way beyond just lovely animals but there are a unique coffee roastery and Cañazo distillery. We are lucky enough to have been invited to visit and both places and see the process of how they process their products. 

Destilería Andina (Andina Distillery) distills ***a Peruvian spirit called ‘Cañazo’***, a transparent spirit made from sugar cane. It has been produced in the Andes since the 16th Century. Very fun and interesting to see!

Mayu Coffee Roastery at El Albergue farm in Ollantaytambo doesn't actually have a cup of coffee for sale but more like a few cups of coffee for tasting then if you love it, you can buy a few packs of coffee beans home. The coolest experience is that staff at Mayu Coffee Roastery showed us ***the whole process of coffee making since handpicking the raw coffee beans one by one*** until it's brewed and served. Spoiler alert, I love its taste!

### 6PM - Alpaca for dinner!
Ooooh! Love them and eat them. Sounds about right? There are a few places in town that offer the menu ***they proudly present 'Alpaca burger'***! As well as wood-fired pizza. It's like the Ollantaytambo trend or something. We have tried both. 

***I don't believe that this small tourist town would have a place that's so much more delicious than the others*** so pick wherever your instinct tell you to. We dined at Nunay Resto Bar. Their pizza is amazingly thin and the owners are friendly. Not to mention all the Incan style kind of decoration. Lovely!

### 9PM - Late night snack. BBQ alpaca in Ollantaytambo!
Alpaca again!? Told you, it's a thing here. Where else in the world you would find BBQ Alpaca as street food? Can't think of one so stuff your face with it as much as you can before you need to get back to the old friend 'Moo moo~'. 

***This type of BBQ meat on skewers called 'Peruvian Anticuchos', most of the time served with potatoes***. Here, a few pieces of alpaca with one whole potato at the top for S/ 3 a skewer or a little less than a dollar. Yum!

### Warm yourself up with a cup of hot Peruvian tea, Emoliente
Peruvian emoliente is a hot herbal tea contains toasted barley, flax seeds, dried horsetail herb, dried grass, and llantén (plantain leaf). 

The tastes is pretty much all a bit sweet and sour from the lime juice. I don’t taste much of the herbal part though ***it’s known for its medicinal properties***. It’s good for the liver and for digestion in general. They sell it for S/ 1 everywhere in Cusco. Pay just that and no more, don't be a dumb tourist like we were.

Alrighty, whole full day and yes, really well-spent! True that Ollantaytambo is such a small mountain village but if we choose to experience it thoroughly, seriously, maybe you would need another day or two. I loved it there! Again, I have been wearing the alpaca headband I got from a non-profit store there in Ollantaytambo, Awamaki until these days! Love love love it!
