On 1 July 1916, the Battle of the Somme began. This military clash in northern France became one of the most infamous days of the First World War. Of the brave British soldiers that fought that day, there were 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 fatalities. Their extraordinary efforts gained only three square miles of territory.

Back in 2016, 100 years on from The Battle of the Somme, The Royal Mint made a coin to commemorate the anniversary. With the creation of a £5 silver proof commemorative coin, it depicts poignant scenes from the terrible event. Created by artist and sculptor John Bergdahl it portrays infantrymen trudging through muddy terrain in no man’s land as a tank rolls alongside them.

The coin has a smooth edge with edge lettering that reads : “DEAD MEN CAN ADVANCE NO FURTHER”. This is a quote from Major-General Sir Beauvoir De Lisle, the full quote reads :
>It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valor, and its assault only failed of success because dead men can advance no further.
