So here we are again with some more of the rubbish I picked up from the Royal mint. Although this series of £5 is a total waste of money, I will admit that these 2 coins probably have my 2 favourite designs of the series.

Over the next couple of days I'll be sharing with you some of the £5 coin in my collection. Now although under the 1971 coinage act, they are deemed legal tender, you'll have a hard job finding anywhere where you can spend then.

The £5 coins have been made from cupro-nickel, Stirling silver(.925) and gold. The cupro-nickel version, pictured below, weighs 28.28g with a diameter of 38.61mm and a thickness of 2.89mm.

First up today the 2004 £5 coin:

Back in 1904 the Entente Cordiale was a series of agreements between the UK and France that brought to end end nearly a 1000yrs of intermittent conflict. The agreement was officially signed on 8 April 1904 between the United Kingdom and France. The term "Entente Cordiale" translates to cordial agreement or understanding. In 2004 this commemorative £5 was struck to mark the centenary of the Entente Cordiale. The image depicts the head and shoulders of Britannia and her French counterpart Marianne.

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on 21st October 1805. The battle between the Royal Navy, led by Horatio Nelson, and the combined fleets of France and Spain off Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish coast was the end result of the naval campaign of 1804-5. In 2005 the Royal Mint marked the bicentenary with two £5 coins. The first of these designs by Clive Duncan, shows Nelson's flagship Victory leading the fleet into battle(pictured above).  HMS Victory is still in service to this day and is moored in Portsmouth dockyard.
