Cheating is usually no fun in a game as it takes away from the challenge. But sometimes it is fun to mess around especially after you have beaten a game and want to get more value from the cartridge. Remember games were still 60 dollars back in the game and you needed to do something after you saw the ending credits. There are a lot of cheats over the years but there are some that really stood out at some of the most well-known ones.
The Konami Code
Yes we all know this one had to be first. Let me see if I still remember it: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Select, Start. I think that is it. Correct me in the comments if I am of. This code was so big that it found it's way in other games and even in some songs. It originated in one of the hardest Nintendo game Contra. The code gave the player 30 lives and they needed all of them as this game was a challenge. It was beatable if you grinded it over and over until you had the patterns down but that could be a long time. But with 30 lives the game all of a sudden became a lot easier to beat. Still hard, but just as crazy.
The Level Pipe Warp In Mario
I don't even know if this counts as a cheat but it makes the game WAY easier and shorter. I probably don't even need to tell you what the skip is as anyone who played this game knows. All you have to do on world 1-2 is run on the top and pass the pipe that lead to the exit for the level. Then you will see three pipes, one that leads to world 2, one to world 3 and the furthest which leads to world 4. Did anyone ever choose 2 or 3? You always went straight to 4. Then on 4-2 you could find another skip to get you further along. This made it easy to get to the last world but being the most difficult you were far from out of the woods. World 8-3 could stop any gamer. Those hammer bros did not mess around.
The Whistles In Mario 3
Another Mario game and another one of the most well known skips in gaming. The Whistle lets you skip to the next 3 levels. Unless you found two then you could go straight to the last world. This really shortened the game. You may not know it if you were busy rushing to the end of the game but Mario 3 is a really long game with a lot of content. It is crazy how much they packed in on the tiny cartridge. You miss out on a lot but if you are looking to beat the game that was the way to do it. But just like Mario 1,the last world was no joke and even if you made it there it does not mean you were going to beat the game.
Big Head Mode In NBA Jam
Not all cheats were to make the game easier, some were just for fun. NBA Jam has a few cheats but the most well known one was giving you players big heads. Did it change the gameplay at all? Nope. It was just to make them look funny and have a laugh.
