This is the nostalgic series to gush about things we hearted back in the day. Some which still hold up and others... not so much. Now I am not a back-in-my-day kind of person, I think there is some awesome geekiness in today's world and always something to look forward to. But that doesn't mean once in awhile we can't take out an old NES cartridge, blow it off (or blow on it) and remember the good old days. Plus it is fun to see if things hold up in today's world, so each item with be given a yes or a no at the end of the post.

Our first nostalgia post is for the SNES. Oh the SNES. Unless you include the backward compatibilty of a PS2, this was arguably one of the best systems released. Sure NES was the original and it made home gaming what it is today, but the super nintendo is where they hit their stride. This was 2D gaming at some of it's best, with the excpetion of a few PS titles and newer games like Braid and Limbo (yes more gushing will be done on those, but they might not be nostaglic yet...), SNES was the system to play before 3D became the norm. Let's just look at some of the games.

Super Mario World

Okay I will be the first to admit that yes this might of been one of the easiest Marios. But so what? Yeah I will give credit to mario 3 for bringing the world map into play, but like many of SNES titles, this is where it was perfected. I miss world maps in 2D games,(or 2D games in general), being able to pick your level was a much better experience than the previous stage-to-stage model. And it was made that much more fun with the inclusion of secret paths and levels. Who didn't enjoy looking for those keys and random keyholes? This is the game that introduced Yoshi. And the feather that let you fly, well dive and lift over and over. This was an experience that any gamer should have if not if they haven't already, if not to see why Mario is one of the biggest name in the industry (and yes still, as the switch is talked about everyone.

Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past

Personally this is my favourite Zelda game. We will probably cover Orcarine of Time in another post and although it was a ground-breaking game, I feel it didn't age as well as A Link To The Past did. I have great memories playing this game with my dad. We couldn't get that book off the shelf. This was back in the day when you didn't have the internet to look up how to do something. How were we to know you were suppose to run at it when you get the charging boots? Just like Super Mario World, this is another game that was on the easy side when you replay it, but still, a fun experience either way.

Chrono Trigger

This was one of my favourite games of all time. It was only challenged years later by Heavy Rain, an cinematic experience that stuck out to me among a lot of other titles. I am huge fan of the JRRPGS, I don't play them as much now-a-days, you know with real life and all, but there is something about leveling a guy up from 1 to badass. I think it that fake sense of accomplishment, I didn't waste 5 hours of my life, I have a level 20 character and some cool items. The style of Chrono Trigger still holds up today. The monsters were visible before you fought them, which was a nice change of pace from the screen just gonig blurry and throwing you ito battle. And the music. This game also had mutliple endings, something that was rare for console games back in the day.

I can go out with title after title, so I'm just going to list a few here. Feel free to gush about any of them in the comments.

Star Fox

FF6

Super Punch-Out

Street Fighter 2

Mega Man X, 2, 3

Maximum Carnage (man I would like to play that one again)

Mega Man 7

Donkey Kong 1,2,3

Earthbound

Earthworm Jim

Fire Emblem

MARIO KART!

The list goes on. All these titles were on the one system but does it still hold up today?

THE VERDICT:

YES! Of course it does. You can pick up a system today or a virtual console and still have a great time. The SNES aged very well. I have a theory for this. Early 3D games, while fun, can be a little difficult to play when put up against newer titles. The reason being that games early in the 3D development stage were still figuring it out. However, games on the SNES were at the top of 2D life-span, so this means they can hold up against any 2D game that has or will come out in the future.

Hope you enjoyed the geeky read. Add any games I missed in the comments

@whatageek

*my upvotes/rep disclaimer

Mario Kart and NHL '94 stood out the most for me. The SNES is currently sitting under my TV in working condition, great console.
