<center>**Polio Vaccine**</center>

The last couple of prompts have had me taking a stroll down memory lane.  Back to second grade, before I left for school one day my mom told me that the school nurse would be giving me and the other kids in my class, medicine to keep us healthy.

At school that day my class was lined up in the hallway.  One by one, the school nurse gave us **sugar cubes** that we had to let dissolve on our mouths.  I thought it was the best medicine ever and wondered why all medications were not put in sugar cubes.

I never thought about it again, not that I can remember, until my daughter was an infant and was vaccinated for the first time.  That is when I asked my mom what medication was in those sugar cubes back then, and that is when I found out it was the polio vaccine.  

There was a reason for her withholding that information from me.  According to my mom, polio was talked about a lot when I was young because she had two family members that had polio and were put inside the "iron lung."  Mom cried many tears during that time.  Whenever I heard those words or saw my mom cry, I cried.  How was my mom supposed to tell me, a second grader that I had to get polio medicine without me freaking out?  Some things are just better left unsaid.
