Flags, flags, flags... Are you sure you understand how this works?

<p>When the price goes up we tend to get new users. &nbsp;I feel almost like we are being trolled by a group of traders who have recently joined the community and want to argue with everyone about how the system works, but how it works is really quite simple....</p>

<p>&nbsp;Simple Explanation of how the reward system works:</p>
<ul>
  <li>Each day the Steem Blockchain creates new Steem&nbsp;</li>
  <li>That Steem is distributed via our votes</li>
  <li>The more stake you hold the more your votes are worth</li>
  <li>When you post (or comment) the community has 3 options
    <ul>
      <li>upvote</li>
      <li>downvote/flag</li>
      <li>no action</li>
    </ul>
  </li>
  <li>A post is active for 7 days</li>
  <li>When that week is over you get to claim whatever the balance is.</li>
</ul>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>Whether or not you like how it works, that is all there is to it. &nbsp;Anyone can flag anyone at anytime for any reason during the 7 days. &nbsp;After that is all just drama and "reaction"</strong>.</p>
<p>We give lip service to the reasons we think people should flag... But the blockchain doesn't care.</p>
<p>Those with the most stake can give the biggest upvotes and downvotes. &nbsp;Their stake gives them the right to allocate those funds.</p>
<p>There have been calls to @ned to fix the system, but the system is supposed to be decentralized and without an Authority. &nbsp;So, that means each and everyone of us that does not like the way the reward pool is being allocated has a responsibility in either working on flagging and re-allocating the reward pool or accepting it the way it is.</p>
<p>The tools we hold:</p>
<ul>
  <li>Our upvotes and our flags (powered by your SteemPower)</li>
  <li>Our voices and blog page to try to sway others</li>
  <li>Which witnesses we support to represent our voices&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

@whatsup, you realy point out important issue about flagging. i am new comer and often think about this. i think this is not a good sign for steemit. stemit is our life and our bread and butter is related with it. so @ned should take action or change some policies on this issue. because many peoples specialy new commers affected and disappointed from flagging.

Hi @whatsup, We're the people who love crypto currency not because it lets us earn a lot of money rather because we *strongly* believe that it's the future of the financial system of the world that's undergoing a revolution at this time and we're already seeing its positive impacts in the society all over the world.

Today's topic is too sensitive. And I'm happy that you took the decision to write on this crucial topic. Downvote / flag is a good thing but usage is not good. It all depends on the mentality of users. However, there should be a transparent system regarding this issue. Sometimes a whale gives a downvote / Flag to a minnow or even a dolphin there are chances that person will loose his / her credibility and might be his career is stoped.So doing this there is no loss of a whale but on the other hand 2nd party will loose everything. So in my opinion ned should take some changes after discussing with some genuine people.

It does seem like the amount of flagging has spiked again in the past week or so and a lot of it is over one individual targeting another over a disagreement about the value and frequency of that person's payouts. I won't mention any names and I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. I've stayed out of it and I'm staying out of it because I don't want to get pulled into the drama as I don't even have enough time to do as much *good* work here as I want to do.

As far as new users getting flagged...Many have been saying this for awhile but it's crucial for newcomers to understand what behaviors / actions are likely to get them flagged and how to at least try and avoid it.

I've been here about 5 months and I've very rarely flagged anyone, especially new people. If they're doing something like plagiarising then I'll try to explain that's generally not tolerated here and hope that will lead them to learning what's generally acceptable / not acceptable here (I say generally because there's so many different opinions and very very few concrete rules).

But  yeah, the drama is back. It had died down for awhile and the short-lived low drama era was nice while it lasted...

Seriously I hate this flag war! Few days back a little mind person started bully me by his SP! He accused me for nothing and he self upvoted his posts and try to show he is a decent guy! I've been in Steemit for more than 4 months, and in all that time I used the flag only twice, both for spam, and in one of those I regretted it and then I removed the flag, explaining that they could mark it if I kept doing that.

It may be against me, and even attack me personally, but I don't really use the flag, maybe just an exception.

Yes this is a good thing new but something amazing but I see I am the strong guarantors get it from them have a stronger reputation I am like I work with a limit but the weak is weak and this hurts me a lot now is not returned when we find someone who has a strong reputation but the themes are trivial and get a lot of upvote and many participation

I've an understanding that if i stick long enough, everything's gonna make sense today or tomorrow. I just want to do what i love to do here.  And i think this is what steemit should be. It's a little bit disingenuous to fail to mention one of the most important trade-offs built into the system:

For every thing that you flag, you lose the equivalent power to upvote something.

For people new to the platform and who aren't familiar with the fact that their voting power is consumed by a flat 2% every time they exercise it, and it returns extremely slowly (being as they are limited by the Steemit interface to only 100% power votes), their flagging activity is just this side of useless – and comparatively, it will be for a very, very, very, very long time, because of the way that Steem Power is accumulated. Not to mention that that power is exactly what they would probably prefer to use to upvote content that they want more of and reward content creators for making it.

Even for people who have been here no little time, the sum total of their SP which translates directly into the effectiveness of their votes is minuscule. Especially compared to the "big guns" who rampage around and engage in some pretty shady, exploitative practices which can disproportionately affect new users.

So in a real sense we can take "our upvotes and our flags" off of your list of tools and replace them with "our tiny upvotes, and our complete avoidance of flags because of their opportunity cost."

Likewise, Witnesses don't give two farts in a whirlwind for the vast majority of plankton users on the platform. They, too, derive direct benefit from courting the relatively tiny number of whales with significant SP – because their votes are weighted quite heavily because of that SP.

I would agree that the level of drama in some quarters is ridiculous, but I would also emphasize that part of that is well-earned because the system as it stands is definitely rigged in an aggressively authoritarian manner. You can contend that it's not, but when we see 90+% of the power, real power, system affecting power, held by less than 5% of the active population – it's hard to deny.

It's sort of like suggesting that medieval Europe was completely egalitarian, because everyone had the ability to pick up a sword – even if access to swords was extremely limited, you could be punished for touching a sword, and only the elite royalty could decide if you could be allowed to touch a sword – but because you have hands and could, theoretically, lift a sword, you are the equal in all ways in society as everyone else.

That's patently ludicrous, but that's the position you're advocating.

"Silly" is what it is.

Now, I'm not one of those advocating for @Ned to suddenly step in and impose some top-down administration solution, but neither am I particularly thrilled with the current state of things which might be best equated with a "state of nature," in which there are a few very, very strong members of the population, of the vast number of quite weak members, and the best level of organization that we see are warlords and vigilante mobs – which is about as regressive as you can imagine. There's a reason that cultures don't evolve until they end up in a situation with sufficient personal security in their person and property to do so.

We are a long way from that on the steem blockchain.

That's extremely disappointing.

Does it demand the level of vitriol and drama that some seem to want to invest it with? No. Nor does it demand the level of blind cultist devotion that we see just as often at play in the community. Both of those positions are irrational and lead to poor understanding of what one can actually, usefully do.

But that's what we've got, especially among the upper echelon of active users who have a significant amount of SP and thus a vastly disproportionate power.

If one of the whales decided that I was someone that they no longer wanted around on the steem blockchain? It would be relatively trivial to invest more SP into a bot account than I'll see in six months of constant posting, set it to flag everything that I post, and then walk away. The relative expense of doing that? Trivial. Is there anything that I could do about it? Absolutely not.

That's the position we find ourselves in. Is it any surprise that new users to the platform who come with the expectation that they'll be able to at least make a difference to their own experience and contribute something rapidly discover that they are highly limited in a real sense on both points? It shouldn't be. It hasn't been. It will continue not to be a surprise.

And it's something that we should probably not be sanguine about. We shouldn't dismiss those concerns just because they don't adhere to the joyous narrative of the blockchain. We should be honest and upfront about how things work.

We absolutely have to embrace the truth, and the truth is not as golden as you would paint it.

I agree with much of what you said, but the purpose of this post was to clarify how the upvote and downvote function works.  

The Distribution problem is a different problem and people on the Internet do not want to take the time to digest all that you just said.

You left out one of the most important things about the upvote and flagging system: the fact that it imposes a very strong, powerful opportunity cost to engage with flagging. In a very real sense, there is a vertical wall between a goodly chunk of the population who live in the community and the people with enough SP to make choices and actions which can actually affect the population.

That plays into talking about how up and down voting works, because without that piece, a newcomer might be somehow convinced that their actions will make a difference in terms of engaging in flagging behavior with the expectation that it will "make the community better."

That's a false hope. It's not just inefficient, it's actively false.

And upvote on a thing at least carries the weight of every single "upvote" being relatively equal in terms of count. If you and I both upvote something, and someone who is been on the platform for six hours upvotes something, all three of us have an equal influence on the number of votes. The creator will be rewarded in smaller proportion by the new guy, but he has engaged with the content at an equal level as any of us.

Now consider the issue of the flag. If you flag something, it gets a pretty serious downward pressure on both reward and Reputation. If I flag something, it gets a little downward pressure on reward and probably almost nothing to Reputation. If the new guy flags something, it has no impact on reward and no impact on Reputation – and on top of that they've given up the chance and opportunity to use that voting power to vote up something that at least would have bumped up the positive signal for a creator.

Taken in terms of the matrix of possible payoffs and gains for upvotes versus down votes, for the vast majority of people on the platform – flagging is a waste of time and effort. For everyone who is new to the platform, flagging is a total waste of time and effort.

And that's a problem that needs to be presented so that people actually can see the things that they can make decisions about and affect in a reasonable way.

In that sense you absolutely painted a golden picture of upvoting and flagging. As presented, you have suggested that it is an effectively egalitarian set of decisions. But it's not. It's nothing like that. Upvoting has minor but recognizable effect. Flagging for new users, and frankly for people who have even been here a while, has almost zero effect and significant cost attached.

That's a big difference from what you presented.

If we want to communicate this information, there are two points which we cannot afford to indulge:

* We cannot paint an unnecessarily rosy picture just because it's the picture that we would prefer were the case. The facts have to be true and accurate.

* We cannot underestimate the intelligence of "people on the Internet." People on the Internet clearly do want to take the time to digest things, and moreover they have the capacity and ability to digest and understand things.

If we accepted that people are too lazy or too stupid to understand things which are more complicated then tying their shoes – let's just pack it up, give up, and stop doing anything.

75% of everything – *everything* – on Steemit goes back to the distribution problem of SP across the population. Voting, whether up or down, is the crystallized distillation of the problem where all the bits of it come together. If when were talking about voting we must avoid talking about distribution, we can't talk about voting.

Do you want to educate people about what they can do and what they should do to be better members of the community? I was pretty sure that was your original intent. If so then you have to trust that people can and will want to understand what you're writing about.

It's a core requirement.

Sometimes flag war starts casually but ended up ugly. I have seen people in order to take revenge, take delegated SP and keep on flagging.

Flag should be used judiciously and the fist time offender should be pardoned .

In this community we can see two kind of whales.

One is kind hearted and the other is short tampered. 

Kind hearted whale adore us even with our mistake just like mother and short tampered whales downvote even with slightest provocation.

SO balance is required to be maintained by a minnow in this community to survive.

There should be some other kind of mechanism between upvote and downvote and that should be to warn a user which is potentially leading to a downvote.

This is required in this platform to use the power of downvote ethically.
