I have been absent for a few days, somewhat to my regret. However, sometimes the business of *life* keeps us busy, and I have been working on my *"Plan A"* of finishing a professional certification.

Conversation sometimes seems almost like an *art,* and sadly it's an art many people don't seem to master.

At least, they fail to master the part of conversation that involves *listening.* Because having authentic dialogue with someone else is about *much more* than simply voicing your opinion about something!

Sadly, a lot of people enter conversations almost with the mindset that being in dialogue with someone is a *competition* to be won or lost, rather than a deeper exchange of information.

I watch people talk to each other... and I can tell that the person who is supposedly *"listening"* is actually not *hearing* the speaker... because they are too busy — inside their head — already forming their *reply;* what they want to say next; their *counter argument.*

But if all your attention is diverted towards what you are going to say next, how can you *possibly* be hearing what the other person is saying?

Of course, you *can't*

In order to listen like a *"true friend,"* we have to set aside our *own* inner voices and just be open to *listening* to the other... and not be focused on what we plan to say next.

Maybe that *sounds* simple enough, but for most people it's a considerable challenge! And it's often a challenge that involves dropping into your heart and realizing that *you're not actually LISTENING* to what is being said.

Being an *"active listener"* takes a bit of practice, but it is well worth the effort because your conversations — and your relationships — will become deeper and more meaningful, as you progress.
