This event (which in the eyes of many people seems like a great joke ... but actually extremely important and serious) is organized by the Cornell Ornithology Laboratory.

The goal is a massive (world-wide) observation of birds for subsequent data collection to help researchers in a number of respects... Among them, the number of endangered species, the number of species which left the extinction list as well as better understand the behavior of birds in general.

At the Cornell Lab site, it is possible to keep track of the bird count that is done by dedicated observers (ranging from professionals in the field to those who are completely lazy on the subject but sympathetic to this hobby). And that's something that happens in no less than 150 countries (on average).

In 2018, more than 7,000 species were cataloged by birdwatchers (online, through the eBird application... which is recognized as a worldwide bird checklist program). This was the result of a collective effort by 30,000 people who submitted their observation lists in that 24-hour period.

But you don't have to spend all day looking at birds if you don't want to, just do some observation (something that has no estimate of time... Since everything depends on the will of the animals themselves) and update the application - or the laboratory - with the necessary information.

There is no specific place for the work to be done (even because the birds are everywhere), but there are hot spots (which can even be searched in the application itself) where there is a greater incidence of them, such as for example: trails in closed forests, wetlands and open fields.

The deadline for submitting the corresponding lists for this year's observations will be until May 08.
