So, I’m walking down the main road adjacent to the river in search of a circus (more on that later) and what do I see? A zoo! I’m game for about anything while traveling so I figured, “Why not”! Not wanting to draw any attention to myself I passed a bill that was large enough to cover the cost and was handed a ticket and change. I’m becoming quite adept at blending in when I travel, that is, if blending in is possible. So, on into the zoo I went. It isn’t a huge place but there’s enough variety to occupy your time if you have a few hours.
Considering the economics of the Balkans in general and Macedonia specifically, they’re doing a decent job here and as time progresses hopefully the animals will enjoy a better life. There’s an enormous cage you can’t help but notice when you enter that’s filled with all sorts of birds and places for them to perch and do their thing I suppose. I walked over to inspect the place for a bit and see what was inside but the novelty wore off and I made my way over to the monkeys. Yes, there are some monkeys and apes here and can be a bit entertaining to watch them go about their lives as monkeys and apes can be. There were a few of them there and the place was not very packed as I happened to enter early so I spent a few minutes watching them but as usual I got bored and moved on.

The hippo exhibit came to my attention as I saw a pond of sorts andsomeone selling large heads of cabbage I believe. I found my way there and leaned over the small wall to see what was at the bottom. I saw a couple of absolutely giant animals in the water just hanging out and didn’t appear inclined to do anything in particular. I think they were sleeping but I’m not sure so the exhibit lost my attention quite quickly. As I made my way around I saw a picture of a Giraffe and walked up to a building where I saw at one inside a building looking out the window.
I’m not quite sure why it was locked inside the building but there it was, staring out at the landscape not doing anything in particular. I could see it through the window but was unable to get close enough to see it well so I moved on. The remainder of the zoo has exhibits for various hoofed animals like gazelles, antelopes, horses and similar creatures with some space to run around. The path throughout the zoo is paved and you can follow it through eventually visiting everything. If you take your time and visit all the exhibits it requires several hours and offers a reasonable variety considering the economics of the place.
There’s also a small venue for eating at the entrance and of course I stopped to grab a drink before finally exiting and making my way further down the road. As I exited there were people hawking something and I was approached by a young woman who began to solicit me in the local language (I told you I blend in well). I answered her in English and I think she was a bit taken aback when I spoke. She did speak a bit of English and I apologized for being unable to speak the local language.
As I said, I travel so much it is quite impossible for me to learn a language every time I travel. Anyhow, the zoo was interesting but I had other plans, I saw a sign for a circus and was intent on locating it.
