Camp Fire - October 15, 2017

To get the Camp Fire started, I will share a common question that I get from people all the time.

Dear Camp Fire;

I live in an apartment in the city and I don't have access to land. How am I supposed to grow my own food or be independent when I cannot buy land? The idea of having land seems remote and impossible to acquire and I feel stuck. What can I do?

Sincerely,
Landless in Seattle

Dear Landless in Seattle;

I recognize that your situation is not unique and in fact there are millions who live in apartments and are completely dependent on their land lords for shelter and they do not provide land to grow food. This is a symptom of a deeper issue where we allowed governments to claim all the land and become our land lord. They then turned the land into a commodity for the rich to buy it up, driving up prices and charging interest to borrow money. Each and every one of us is the land and belong on the land with no land lord, mortgages or tax. But we are a long ways away from having that idea take hold. So what can you do until then?

In the city there is lots of land in the river valley, ravines, parks, etc where people can engage in 'gorilla gardening'. Planting a potato here and there can result in a lot of food being grown in areas accessible to the public but not seen. There are also community gardens sprouting up that people can access as well. I've heard of lots of seniors who cannot garden any more and are more than willing to have people garden their land to keep it going. All it takes is getting out and talking to people and asking around.

I also know a couple who was gifted a huge parcel of land from a dentist as a result of their work and relationship. There are wealthy people willing to help out others and all that is required is that we build healthy relationships. The gifts do come!

I've also seen people build aquaponics systems within their apartment and balcony. While this will grow a little bit of food, it does start establishing a method towards independence. If an individual can save even a little bit of money, that could then fund further growth towards independence.

There are people here and else where that teach these kinds of things and speak to how food is supposed to be free. John (@foodisfree) and @lyndsaybowes both advocate the idea that food is free and they give away their excess food for their neighbours. They grow food instead of grass! If people did that, the land within the city could produce a huge percentage of the food being consumed by those who live in the city. Their dependency on the country side or having to ship food from around the world could be drastically curtailed.

While I hear your frustration, there are people like myself working towards removing the land from the control of the state so that people can return to the land upon which they belong. No more land lords, people being 100% responsible and accountable for their own lives. But there are many things one can do to prepare for the day when the land lords are gone and people are free to grow their own food and provide for their own needs. It is up to each individual to do what they can. There are solutions out there. Be creative and look around.

Sincerely;

I AM that I AM
My vessels name is rob in the pagé family

I now turn over the talking feather to anybody else sitting around the camp fire that has something to say. If anybody has a question they want to ask for the next camp fire, please e-mail it to me at rpage.np@gmail.com.

@amberyooper ·
A small container garden can also be maintained in an apartment setting, as long as you have a window for light. Growing lights can also be used if there's not enough light from the windows. You may not be able to grow much, but you can grow something.
