I think it shouldn't be understood as media's ignorance. This was *doomed* to happen anyway because of the lack of proper terminology. I had talked about these reasons in one of my [posts](https://busy.org/@xyzashu/indian-cricket-captain-turns-vegan-really) a few days back.
Actually Virat Kohli has adopted **vegan diet** hence he can be called **dietary vegan**. But due to lack of a single word for *dietary veganism*, people tend to think *dietary* as some adjective to the word *vegan*. So in short these people too are referred as vegans.
It's like if someone turns lacto-vegetarian or lacto-ovo-vegetarian; he/she calls himself or herself a vegetarian. So vegetarians started using the term *pure vegetarian* to describe that they don't even consume eggs or dairy. Of course, in India, today this term *pure vegetarian* has deteriorated to include dairy due to the popular culture.
I think there shouldn't be any problem to accept dietary vegans as vegans. For the sake of clarity, you can define yourself as **pure vegan**.
Hope it makes some sense to you.
