Whilst investigating the death of a local computer programmer, a stable housekeeper called Maureen Chen uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, ripped rock circulating throughout Wales. As soon as anyone uses the rock, he or she has exactly 50 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look skeletal. A marked person feels like an ample monkey to touch.
Maureen gets hold of the rock, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into her mind: a deprived rat balancing on a pretty computer programmer, an old newspaper headline about a drunk driving accident, a hooded puppy ranting about toes and a drinking well located in a grand place.
When Maureen notices her toes have monkey-like properties, she realises that the curse of the ripped rock is true and calls in her nephew, a housekeeper called Simon Kowalski, to help.
Simon examines the rock and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the deprived rat balancing on a pretty computer programmer particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Maureen and Simon pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded puppy. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
